忙しき日は続く Busy days continue.

前にも書いたように、秋は園芸家にとって最も忙しい季節の一つである。ここ数日でもう一鉢のクリスマスローズと紫陽花を2本地植えにした。この紫陽花は今年春に静岡県で買った物だ。
As I had wrote before, autumn is one of the busiest season for gardeners. In these few days, I planted one more lenten rose, and two hydrangeas on the ground. The hydrangeas were what I bought this spring in Shizuoka prefecture.
それからアメリカサイカチの枝を少し切った。この秋にしなくてはならない剪定のほんの内部だ。
Then, I also cut several branches of honey locust. Just a little parts of many pruning that I have to do in this autumn.
友人の家庭に差し上げる多肉を7鉢作った。
I arranged seven succulents pots as gifts to my friend family.
また、庭にある鉢をあちこちと動かした。秋の涼しくなった太陽に最適な場所にするためだ。明日はこの春に挿し木した紫陽花の苗を4鉢、別の友人のご家庭に差し上げることになっている。
I have to move pots in the garden here and there so that the location of them suit well to cooler autumn sun. It is planned that four young hydrangeas that I propagated this spring are given to another family tomorrow.
そうすれば、もっと場所が空いて、自由に鉢を動かせるようになる。
After that I will have some more space to move around my pots more freely.

台風12号がもたらした涼しい風で秋がもう遠くないことを感じさせてくれた。

秋、それは園芸家にとって春と同じく繁忙と興奮の季節だ。我々は日本の夏の酷暑に耐えてきた植物たちを世話して疲弊からの回復に手助けしなくてはならない。一つの方法は植え替えが必要な植物は植え替えを。もう一つは肥料をくれるのだ。また夏の間に乱雑に伸びた木の枝や枯れかけた一年草を剪定しなくてはならない。その一方、蘭については来るべき花の季節にそなえて準備させなくてはならない、潅水の量を減らしたり肥料を停止したりしてだ。私は蘭をスプリンクラーの水の当たるところに置いているので、位置を動かすか水の量を調節しなくてはならない。もっと先には、枯れた多肉を取り除かなくてはならないし、今年は贈り物用にいくつか小さい鉢に植え替えもしよう。また、冬に室内に入れる鉢植えのサイズを枝を切ったりして小さくすることでその準備をしなくてはならない。もう一つの方法は切った枝などから挿し木をすることだ。これは秋早くからしなくてはならない。挿し木で小さい株を作ることは部屋のスペース節約に役立つ。等々。
Autumn, it is a season of busyness and exiting at the same time for gardeners as much as spring. We have to take care of plants that have been bearing the heat of Japanese summer to help them recover from their exhaustion. One way is replanting the plants that need ones. Another is feeding fertilizer. We have to prune branches of trees and dying annuals that wildly grew during summer. On the other hand, for orchids we have to have them prepare for the coming flowering season by reducing irrigation and stop fertilizing. I keep them under the water sprinkler, so I have to change their location or adjust the amount of water. Later on, we have to remove dead succulents and this year I will replant some succulents into small pots to make gifts. Also late in autumn, we have to prepare pots that have to be brought indoor during winter reducing the size of them by pruning branches. Another way is propagate plants from cuttings. Making smaller new plants from cutting is a good way to utilize spaces in my room. This must be begun earlier in autumn. Etc., etc....
今日、私はこのタスクの一つを開始した。私はレンテンローズの株を一つ地植えにしたのだ。これは去年の春買った二鉢の内の一つだ。これらをポットの中で今まで育ててきた。何故なら、変化していく環境に対して位置を動かすことにより保護しやすいからだ。しかしある程度以上大きくなった後はポットで維持していくことは難しい。今日がその時だと思ったのだ。一つのタスクは終了したが、私にはまだもう一つのレンテンローズと3鉢の紫陽花がある。まず植える場所を探さねばならない。道のりは遠い。
Today, I just started one of the tasks. I planted one of potted lenten roses on the ground. This is one of two pots I bought in the spring last year. I have been keeping them in pots because plans in the pots are easier to protect from varying environment by just relocating them. But, after it grows to certain size it becomes hard to keep in pots. I thought today was the time. While one task was done, I still have one more lenten rose and three hydrangea pots to plant. I have to find spaces for them first. Long way to go.
それは置いといて、もう一つしなくてはならないことがあった。秋は涼しくなり雨も多くなるので、植物、特に巻柏やバラ、は細菌にやられて病気になりがちだ。殺菌剤を巻柏にかけた。
Leaving that aside, there was another task to be done. Since autumn is cooler and we have more rain, the plants, especially selaginellas and roses, tend to be affected by germs and get sick. I poured some germicide over my selaginellas.
この若い娘は「楊貴妃」という名、色が変わり始めた。
This young girl called "Yang Kuei Fei" is looking well and started to turn the color.
これは歌舞伎や日本舞踊で有名な「鏡獅子」の名前をもらっている。それも色が変わり始めた。
This is called "Lions in a mirror", a name of Japanese traditional Japanese dances and "Kabuki" plays. It also started to change the color of leaves.
これはまだ生きてはいるが夏から元気がない。鉢が大きすぎるかもしれない。
This looks sick since summer although it still lives. Maybe the pot is too large.
いずれにしても色々とすることが多い。
Anyway I have a lot to be done.

しばらくぶりだネェ君たち Guys, it's been a while.

このアジサイは、挿し木から一年ぐらい(2年かもしれない)育てて今年庭に植えた５本の内の１本。元々の親木は15年以上前に古い知人から頂いた物。しかし、親木を植えた場所は周りで成長した木の陰になり、弱って、もう何年も花が咲かなくなっていた。この若い株が花をつけたのにはビックリした。母木の咲きたいという想いが子供に伝わったかと思ってしまう。
This hydrangea was one of the five that planted this year on the ground after I had them grew from cuttings for a year, maybe two years. The original mother plant was a gift from our old friend more than fifteen years ago. However, the place it is planted had been shaded by trees that grew during the years, became weaker, and stopped flowering for many years. It was surprising that this young plant bore flowers. It made me think that the desire of their mother to flower was inherited to the child.
去年はこのトリトマは咲かなかった。2年前は咲いたと思う。これは今年２つ目の花だ。さほど大きな花ではないが、まだ株が花をつけられるほど元気とわかって嬉しく思う。
みんなの趣味の園芸によると、トリトマは旧属名で、現在ではクニフォフィア（シャグマユリ）属に分類されているとのこと。
The Torchlily did not flower last year. I think it flowered two years ago. This is the second flower in this year. Although they are not as big as expected, we are pleased that they are healthy enough to be able to have flowers.
このクレマチスは冬から春の時期には余り咲かなかった。多分、去年植え替えたからだろうと思う。ビックリしたことに、一週間くらい前から花が咲き出した。この株も咲かないではいられないんだろうねえ。

イタリアの巨大レモンは若い葉を伸ばし始めた。6月遅くまで芽を伸ばさないとはよっぽど暑い気候が好きと思われる。
The baby tree of Italian big lemon had started to grow young leaves. The tree looks to love warm weather since it started to grow in late June.
桔梗は満開。ただ、伸びすぎて自分では立っていられなくなっている。手作りのトレリスに縛り付けた。
A balloonflower is in full bloom although it grew too tall stand up by themselves that I tied them up to my hand made trellis.

これほど矛盾した花言葉を持つ花もないと思う。幾つかは賞賛で、幾つかは否定的な意味合いだ。多分、他にあまり無い花色が変化する性質とシーボルトと楠本滝の逸話に起因するのではないだろうか。
I think there are no other flowers that has conflicting meanings. Some are appraisals, some are negative meanings. Probably it is because of the unusual character of changing color of flowers and a love story of Dr. Siebold and Ms. Taki Kusumoto.
アジサイは日本原産の植物で日本人にとても愛されている。公園やお寺でアジサイで有名な場所も多く、沢山のアジサイが咲いている。
It originates in Japan, and so it is definitely loved by Japanese. There are many popular parks and temples populated with varieties of hydrangeas.

This was given by a friend of my wife when we visited her home many years ago. It stopped flowering after I replanted this a few years ago that is not unusual. Considering the figure I think this will probably flower in the next season.

今日は数日前から始めたイワヒバの植え替えを継続する予定だった。天気予報は午後から雨の筈だったが、朝の8時頃からもう少し降りだした。植え替えは諦めざるを得なかった。その代わりに紫陽花の挿し木を地面に植えた。雨が本降りになれば苗の定着にもよかろう。苗は少し定植には小さすぎるかもしれないが、鉢植えの紫陽花の水やりをいつも心配しているのに少々嫌気が差してきたのだ。地面はほとんど粘土なので、大きすぎるくらいの穴をほって沢山の有機物の堆肥で満たしてそこに植えて表層は少々の山砂で覆った。まだ、残り3個のポット苗をどこに植えるか考えないといけないが、少なくともこの２本は気持ちの良い木漏れ日の当たる地面で安全になった。
It was planned to continue repotting selaginellas today that I started since several days ago. The weather was predicted to rain from the afternoon, but it started to rain a little around 8 in the morning. I have to give up the repotting. Instead I planted hydrangea cuttings on the ground. When rain gets more, it will be good for the plants to get steady. They may be a little bit smaller for this, but I got a little tired of taking care of the potted hydrangea constantly worrying of watering them. Since the ground consists mostly of clay soil I dig a larger hole for them and filled the hole with a lot of organic compost and buried them there with some sand on top. Still I have to consider where to plant the remaining three pots, but at least these two became safe on the cosy partially shaded ground.

They may be a little bit smaller for this, but I got a little tired of taking care of the potted hydrangea constantly worrying of watering them. Since the ground consists mostly of clay soil I dig a larger hole for them and filled the hole with a lot of organic compost and buried them there with some sand on top. Still I have to consider where to plant the remaining three pots, but at least these two became safe on the cosy partially shaded ground.

贈り物は俺の弱点 Gifts are my soft spots.

今日は5鉢の紫陽花を植え替えた。去年挿し木した苗だ。挿し木して売ろうと言うのではない。これは何年も前にある方から頂いた紫陽花の枝なのだ。庭の一角に植えているのだが、周りの木が大きくなり葉が茂って日陰になってしまった。そのせいか、ここ数年はあまり元気が無かった。枯れてしまわないかと心配なのだが、植え替えるにも周りの木と多分その根が邪魔で掘り出すことも困難だ。
Today, I repotted five pots of hydrangea. The pots that I planted from cuttings last year. I don't intend to sell them. These are branches of a hydrangea that was gifted by one of my close acquaintances years ago. It is planted at the corner of our garden, and it was shaded as the surrounding trees grew large and leaves grew thick. Perhaps because of that, it has not been looking vivid for these past few years. I was worrying that it would die, but it is hard to dig up because of the surrounding trees and probably their roots.

俺はこの頂きものというのに非常に弱い。枯らしてしまったら頂いた人に大変申し訳ないと思ってしまうのだ。勿論枯らしたことは幾度もあるが、そういう時は後ろめたさに長期間苛まれる。
Gifts are one of my weak points. I would feel deeply sorry for the presenter if the given plants died. Of course, it happened more than several times. I regret them for long time.
ということで、この頂きものの紫陽花が生きている内に挿し木苗を作り他に植え替えようと昨年挿し木したのだ。実は、一昨年もやったのだが、何故かうまく根付かなかった。昨年は幸運にも5本が根付いた。鉢が小さくなってきたので一回り大きい鉢に植え替えたのだ。お母さん似だろう?
So, I decided to grow clones from cuttings while the tree is alive, and planted them. Actually, I did two years ago, but it was not successful. Fortunately, the five plants successfully took roots. Today, I repotted them into one size larger ones. They look like their mother, don't they?
