Aftermath of the drastic cuttings in May

2015.6.27
I chopped a eucalyptus in May in one third expecting young branches would start growing.

Today, I was surprised to find my expectation became reality. I was pleased while I was feeling gloomy that I had to prune them every year.

Tough guy you are.

Be brave and survive in summer

My two sempervivum pots became full through one year.  There is no friends to take these home.  They have to survive hot and humid summer in Japan that they hate.  I have to put the pots in the shade without watering during summer.  They need some space to breathe between each of them.  I decided to remove some of them, and plant them on the ground.  I know it is harsh for the one on the ground to stay in rain and sunshine during summer, but there is no other way.

The two pictures are pots after I removed some semps.  Still crowded, but better than before.

The ones removed were planted near Agaves.  Good luck, guys.

Do you know Pawpaw?  It is a name of a fruit tree.  Sounds like tropical, isn't it?  But, it is temperate, and very winter hardy.  Last November when we visited Tateshina, the owner of the hotel gave us the fruits and suggested me to seed the seeds.
Seven month since then, nothing happened in the pots... Just until today.

When I was hanging around as usual in this morning, I noticed this.

And this.

Two similar sprouts in two different pots. No doubt. They showed that they are alive when I almost give them up.

There is another one unexpected.  I thought this is a leaf plants from Australia.  Recently it started to bloom strange flower. Surprising.

We will win!

Last summer, my selaginella was damaged badly by worms. It was a really disastrous scene.  Fortunately, most of them are recovering from the damage. This is "Sumonryu" recovered from almost no leaves condition.

Irises that grow next to the shelf of selaginella, that actually had been growing there before I made the shelf, is so senior to the selaginellas. This year, leaves are smaller and thus can only be expected smaller flowers.  Anyway, it makes me feel fresh just suitable for this season.

Good news and Bad news

2015.6.1

There are a good news and a bad news, today.
First the good news is that Lemon I brought back from my travel started to grow again.  I had it sun burnt about a month ago when I put it outside for the first time.  Halves of the leaves have gone, but today I found tiny new leaves came out.

Now, the bad news is about Begonia masoniana that showed new leaves in April.  First I had it too wet and it became weak.  After that I was out of house about ten days.  While I am not at home, automatic sprinkler was supposed to keep it moist.  However, what I found when I came home is dried soil and leaves.  I don't know if it was because of unusual heat waves that attacked the area one day before, or my placement of the pot on the shelf was not good.  Still I have not given up and keep on watering it every day.
