吊るせ! Hang it!

今日の主役はこのコウモリラン、ビカクシダだ。殆どの人が知っているように、これは着生植物で、自然界では樹の幹等に張り付いて成長する。これはポット植えで売られていて、何年も鉢を何度も大きくしながら育ててきた。一応ちゃんと育ってきたが、鉢という自然でない姿で育てるのをいつも嫌だと思ってきた。

Today's subject is this stag-horn fern. As most of you know, this is epiphytic, and in nature they grow sticking on tree trunks and things like that. It was sold in a pot, and I grew it for years replacing pots to larger ones repeatedly never liking an idea of forcing it to grow in a pot that is not their nature even though it has been growing OK.  

そして、今葉でポットを覆い隠そうとしている。まるで自分の自然の姿を取り戻すために精一杯努力しているかのように。もう我慢出来なかった。
Now, it tries to cover the pot with its leaves like it exert the best effort to behave like an epiphyte. I could not tolerate this any more.

実は以前からハンギングバスケットに植えようと考えていた。そのアイデアは名古屋農業センターで見つけたものだ。ビカクシダが幸せそうに紐でぶら下がっているのを見たのだ。ハンギングのほうがくだらんポットの上に乗っているよりよかろうと思った。
Actually, I have been considering it to plant at a hanging basket that idea I found at a conservatory of Nagoya agricultural center. There, I saw one stag-horn fern was hanging by a string happily. I thought it must be better than sitting on a shitty pot.
しかし、吊るすには何か掴まるものが必要だ。何年も使われずに放ってあったバスケットがあった。中にクッションとシールを兼ねてヤシの繊維をしき、その中に葉の一部がバスケットから飛び出すようにシダを入れ、生き水苔を保湿用に押し込んだ。生き水苔はうちの池の周りで恐ろしく増殖している。
But to hang it, it needs something to cling to. There is a basket that have been left unused for yeas. I put some palm fiber for cushioning and sealing, put the fern inside having some leaves sticking out of the basket, and pushed in some live sphagnum that is growing around our pond furiously to keep humidity.

最初の計画では、シダを紐でバスケットにくくりつけようと考えていた。しかし、結構しっかりと収まったので縛りはなしにしておいて様子を見ることにした。もしうまく行けば、何年後かに新しい葉が醜いバスケットを覆い隠すだろう。
In the original plan, I was considering to tie the fern to the basket with some strings. But it ended up pretty stable, so I will leave it without any tying, and see how it will be. If things go well, the leaves will cover and mask the ugly wire basket in some years hopefully.

この手荒な扱いに気分を悪くしているかもしれない。愛の証に手作り灌水システムのノズルの１つを捧げた。
I am afraid it may feel disturbed by my rough treatment. To show my love, I dedicated one of the nozzles of my DIY irrigation system to make it happier.
