It is time to wake up my selaginellas.
To do so, I removed a vinyl covering them whole winter, and poured water a few days ago. Next day was rain. So they should have been soaked.
Still some are not waken up. You sluggers!
It seems young or small ones wake up faster than the big old ones. This reminds me when I was a kid, I woke up on every Sunday much earlier than my parents and had nothing to do until they woke up.
This is the one about to wake up.
This is a hyacinth that has come to our home many years ago. Although it does not have a big flower, it blooms faithfully in spring every year.
Primula flowers are jam-packed!
Lenten roses are also still in good shapes.

FY 2016 Selaginella directory
2017.1.17
Today, a copy of annual "Selaginella directory" of the last year was sent to my home. It lists the most popular selaginella species in the last year, and is issued by Japan Selaginella Federation every year. Similar directories were published since long time ago. The oldest one like this was published in 1843. The current series of directories started in 1947 when the federation was founded. It was not every year until 1957, so this is the sixty-four issue.
It is interesting to see the elegance of names. Some of them are like the names of Sumo wrestlers. And, exact same names are used the other traditional plants in Japan that have been loved more than hundred years, and Saleginella is one of them. Examples of them are "Furan", Neofinetia falcata - a kind of orchid- ; "Omoto", Japanese rhodea, "Sekkoku" Dendrobium moniliforme. I think, probably, the names represent the taste of Japonism.
I marked the species that I own. There are many that I do not have, and at the same time many that are not listed of which I own. Way so far to be called a maniac, but so small my garden is to be a maniac.
Compared with the last year's issue, this year six were newly registered while it was two in the last year. The other listings are almost same, but a little difference.
Among what I own, eighteen were not listed this year.

By a cool wind the typhoon #12 brought had us feel like autumn is not far.
Autumn, it is a season of busyness and exiting at the same time for gardeners as much as spring. We have to take care of plants that have been bearing the heat of Japanese summer to help them recover from their exhaustion. One way is replanting the plants that need ones. Another is feeding fertilizer. We have to prune branches of trees and dying annuals that wildly grew during summer. On the other hand, for orchids we have to have them prepare for the coming flowering season by reducing irrigation and stop fertilizing. I keep them under the water sprinkler, so I have to change their location or adjust the amount of water. Later on, we have to remove dead succulents and this year I will replant some succulents into small pots to make gifts. Also late in autumn, we have to prepare pots that have to be brought indoor during winter reducing the size of them by pruning branches. Another way is propagate plants from cuttings. Making smaller new plants from cutting is a good way to utilize spaces in my room. This must be begun earlier in autumn. Etc., etc....
Today, I just started one of the tasks. I planted one of potted lenten roses on the ground. This is one of two pots I bought in the spring last year. I have been keeping them in pots because plans in the pots are easier to protect from varying environment by just relocating them. But, after it grows to certain size it becomes hard to keep in pots. I thought today was the time. While one task was done, I still have one more lenten rose and three hydrangea pots to plant. I have to find spaces for them first. Long way to go.
Leaving that aside, there was another task to be done. Since autumn is cooler and we have more rain, the plants, especially selaginellas and roses, tend to be affected by germs and get sick. I poured some germicide over my selaginellas.

This is called "Lions in a mirror", a name of Japanese traditional Japanese dances and "Kabuki" plays. It also started to change the color of leaves.

Is this a reward?
The season is changing. Orchid season is almost over. These are the last ones. The Paphiopedilum I bought last year may need some days to open the bud.
It was one day last year as usual I went to a gardening shop near my house and found this on sale. This one with complete black flower had been attracting me wildly. However, I hesitated buying because I believed a Phphiopedilum of leaves with patchy patters are difficult to grow. Finally, the desire won.
However, the plant had been substantiating my fear by showing very little growth compared with the other similar ones I have, until this early spring. At first I thought it was a died leaf or something that a black stuff was noticed near one of the leaves. The length of the stem was about two third of the leaves. One day I wore my glasses and found out it was a small bud. Still, it was so small and fragile, and I could not believe it would grow well. After that much to one's unease, the bud grew slowly but steadily, and also the leaves around it grew well. It is almost there. I hope this will repeat every year.
It's been about ten days since I started repotting selaginellas. Of course I have not continued doing this, but the last several days were almost devoted to the work. It is a tedious work, but needs close attentions and careful handling. After pulling out a plant, by looking at the condition of the roots of each pot, I have to chose the size of pot to replant, adjust an amount of fertilizer, and think over what was wrong if the condition is not so satisfactory. This morning I finished all of them. They look fresher and I hope they will brow vigorously.
While I was replanting, I found several babies are growing in the pots. I planted some of them in smaller pots.

After I finished I found one raspberry that is growing near the selaginella shelf was ripened. It tasted fresh and ripe. I guess this is additional reword for my lengthy work besides the fresher looking selaginellas.
The raspberry tree does not grow much. Every year one shoot comes out, give us a few berries, and die. This year, the second shoot came out for the first time. We may be able to expect berries in autumn.

Selaginella directory
2015.12.3
A few days ago, a copy of annual "Selaginella directory" of this year was sent to my home. It lists the most popular selaginella species in the year, and is issued by Japan Selaginella Federation every year. Similar directories were published since long time ago. The oldest one like this was published in 1843. The current series of directories started in 1947 when the federation was founded. It was not every year until 1957, so this is the sixty-third issue.

After the typhoon

I went out to see one of my old friends after no-see of several months. The typhoon #15 was attacking through the south-west part of Japan, and we only had a little of gust and some rain.
Today, we had intermittent rains and sunshine between them. I went out in the garden while sun was shining.
