16 Degree Tank

2018.1.9
It is about the temperature setting of my fish tank. Last winter, it was 20 deg. Celsius. It is 16 deg. now although the temp usually gets higher than the setting during the daytime because of the air conditioning of the room.

The reason I can lower the temperature this year is that of the disaster happened a few month ago. One weekend in the early November, we went out for a short trip for four days. Every year, I start heating in December, so the tank was not heated. A big chill came at the weekend. We encountered the first snow fall this year during the trip.

When I came home, I found unnamed cichlids and Cardinal Tetras were dead. The temp was lower than ten deg. C. Last year I killed all fish in the tank because of parasites. And this year this. I did not have a word to apologize them. What were fine were Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnows, shrimps, and unexpectedly an African Lamp Eye

As fish needs higher temperature was dead, I decided to lower the temp. Saving energy. I think I can lower the temp more, but the temp controller I have starts beeping when the water temp differs a lot from the setting. So I have it as it is.

Later I added some more regular White Cloud Mountain Minnows, and Indian Glass Fishes. They also withstand low temperature.

Now the tank is a half terrarium. This corner has been wetland above water for a while.  The area is covered with Peperomias, Microsorium, Cryptocorynes, Cryptanthuses, etc. The lava stone in the front was caved and butterworts are planted.

Another wetland area. Since it was made above water recently, plats are still struggling to adjust to the new environment. An Echinodorus major is flowering. In the back, there is also a lava rock covered with Microsorium, Aromaticus, Green Penny Fern, and another type of Polypodiaceae.

New members

2017.7.26
I introduced two kinds of new members in my aquarium. It is because many cardinal tetras died because of my careless changing of water the other day.
One of them is this Golden White Cloud Mountain minnow. I wanted to get them sooner since they are robust and can tolerate wide range of water temperature. This golden ones look good, too.

I also bought this, a kind of Apistogramma I think. A girl at the fish shop kindly warned me that this type is rough natured, and are not recommended to mix with the Golden White Cloud Mountain minnow.

I thanked her and anyway I bought them all. In my tank there are this blue tetras shown below. They are rough tempered too. After I get them together, these two types of tough guys were intimidating each other. It looks like they found a solution. The Apisto's are mostly hiding between the rocks and come out only they sense smell of food, and blue tetras are swimming wildly as before, and the golden ones are swiftly dodge.

Jungle?

2016.8.2

My tank has the hight of 60cm, but water line is only 40% of it. The reason is I had always wanted to own an aqua-terrarium tank that I saw in books. Aqua-terrarium means a mixture of an aquarium and terrarium obviously. The concept is mimicking a scenery of waterside. Having water and land in the same tank. So from the beginning I filled 80% of it with water. At that time, it was a more like aquarium with less water than a terrarium. Gradually, I decreased the hight of water searching a good scenery of waterside taking more than ten years. It has been like a lake loses water gradually by the change of climate.

The back half or background of the tank is filled by leaves growing in the air like a jungle. Various types of plants can grow in this condition. Some are growing from the bottom soil in the water, and some are on the porous rocks or driftwoods without directly touching water. Succulents, ferns, begonia, and carnivorous. Especially the begonia has larger leaves than the one outside, and looks it like the condition very much.

In May; yes it was May, how fast the days go; I cut some of chameleon plants and lizard's tails growing in the garden, and planted them to have them submerged as

The are fine. Against my will, however, they has been growing just emergent seeming nothing different from their siblings in the garden. They do not obey my wish easily.

I often say "l love gardening.", "I love plants.", or "I love flowers." However, gardening is my very selfish activities , I sometimes feel. We plant plants where we wish, prune branches to shape them as we want, or propagate  regardless of whether the plants like it or not.

My aquarium tank, that is partially a small garden, is a typical product of my selfishness. Plants are contained in a small tank where they would not view any sunshine. Many times I relocate plants. I plant them to the new locations after pulling off the plants ignoring severing their roots or even cutting in the middle of the stems just for changing the scenery.

The most I feel selfish when I force plants growing submerged in the water to grow in the air which is called to have emerged leaves, and vice versa. It occurs in the natural environment as some plants are growing in the area that is submerged in rainy seasons and emerged in dry seasons. However, I sympathize with the plants considering the stress they have to bear.

I was successful in this selfish activities by having some plants from submerged to emerged. One is microsorium, another example is cryptocoryne. And, still waiting ruffle sword to be emerged.

Micosorium mostly seen in submerged condition.

Today I did the opposite. I cut some of chameleon plants and lizard's tails growing in the garden; both of them are common on wet ground of Japan not under the water usually; and planted to have them submerged as I just wanted some change in the tank. Now, they are almost choked while they try being acclimated to the new environment, and I am looking at them feeling thrilled.

Fin spreading

This morning when I was cleaning my aquarium, I found two Butterfly Rainbow Fish were spreading their fins and bumping each other. This is often seen behavior of some kinds of male fish trying to menace another  male. They are in mating seasons? I thought there were only one male, but apparently another male appeared while I had not noticed. The fish are not so eye catching usually, but fighting males stand out enough indeed.

Meanwhile a Gold Nugget Plecostomus came in view. It is very shy, and it is very rare to come out in view when a human is close to the tank.

Solomon and water flea and verandah

2015.8.21

A few days ago, I took out a book "King Solomon's Ring" written by Konrad Lorenz that I bought many years ago. Because, at that night I remembered that the book described about so called "balanced aquarium" that I started experimenting since this past May. It goes as, "cover the bottom of a glass tank with clean sand, and insert in the foundation a few stalks of ordinary water plants. Pour in carefully a few pints of tap water and stand the whole thing on a sunny window-still. As soon as the water has cleared and the plants have begun to grow, put in some little fishes, or, better still, go with a jam jar and a small net to the nearest pond..."

Amazon

As I was reading again after a long time, I was almost tempted to go out and capture some creatures at the nearest pond.

Konrad Lorenz was an Austrian zoologist, ethologist, and ornithologist.  The book written by Japanese authors that I can think of and that can be compete with the "Solomon" stuff is "Convenience of Water flea" mainly organized as dialogs between a ethologist Dr. Toshitaka Hidaka, who is a translator of the "Solomon" stuff, and Mr. Akira Sakata. Mr. Sakata is famous as a saxophone player in Japan, but he graduated with fisheries science major.
Reading this book again, I remembered when I CREATED the water flea just from a bundle of rice straws in my junior high days.

These two books reminded me of another book "Botanical Life" by Seikou Ito. Although this is not as academic as the former two and is not about aquarium mostly, I like the touch of the sentence that is so witty. I always want to write sentences like him. It became a series of TV program called "Plant boy, Verander" while I did not notice. I now watch the program by recording the broadcast every day. He appears on media criticizing Japanese government and things. As one of the fans of him, I'd rather see him with more otherworldly  flirtatious attitude.

Today's aquarium. Three months has passed after it became "almost" balanced aquarium.

Food chain

2015.8.14

Guests visited us yesterday found a dead cardinal tetra in my aquarium. It lay on the sand. The other cardinal tetra looked fine. I think they are here about a year. It is rare that we see a dead fish even though we watch the tank everyday. They just silently disappear. Because it is consumed by the other creatures before we notice.

This morning I found a shrimp eating something. Here it is. The bone of a dead cardinal tetra.

Will Natto clear up?

Yesterday, I was trying to find a good way to make water in my aquarium clearer googling internet. I found some chemicals used to clear the tap water. However it is not directly applicable to aquariums. One article that attracted me was to use natto (fermented soybean) bacteria. Interesting isn't it? Sticky natto bacteria makes water clearer. The site recommends to use water after washing some natto with it. But, I decided to use whole natto that, I thought, can be food for fish.

This morning I dropped some natto into the aquarium. I had expected many fish and shrimps would be attracted because of the smell of natto. But, they were almost ignoring the natto for several minutes. The first brave fish was cardnal tetra. Especially one of them started to peck the natto. When debris were swirling, the other came to eat them. But the other fish did not try to peck the natto beans themselves.

After another several minutes, one rosy bitterling (Rhodeus ocellatus) followed the cardinal tetra. They pecked the natto alternately. No shrimp or plecostomus came closer.

At this time I had to go out for several hours. When I came back, almost all natto has gone. And the last one still pecking was the rosy bitterling.

This pleco recentlly scarcely seen appeared but showed no interests to the natto.

The large one also ignored the natto.

After several trial, the other fish and shrimps started to peck natto. However, effect to the transparency is still unkown.

By the way, the tank has not been kept without a pump and a filter since May. There has been no problem so far.

Leak

2015.5.18
The fish tank is doing fine without any filtering or any water circulation almost twenty days.  However, I found a different problem.  Water LEAK!!

A few days after I cleaned my fish tank and stopped filtering like I wrote previously, I discovered some water in the filter room below the main tank.  As it is too bad news to consider that there was leak, I decided to regard it was water that spilt during my cleaning the filter tank.  However, even several days after I wiped the water, the water came from somewhere.  Looking at closely I found out there was leak at the hole of the main tank where the overflow pipe goes through.

Next morning I went to a DIY shop near-by and  bought cement that works for the wet surface.

It was not easy to work as it is in a small box and two pipes are located very closely, but I struggled to apply the cement, and the result is this.  Not so bad?

Also, I was worrying that the leak would worsen as time until I found out the real cause of the leak, that was a little dislocation of overflow pipe that probably I did it when I cleaned the filtering tank.  Before I applied the cement, I fixed this too.

After nine hours, no more leak so far!!

Stopped the pump of my aquarium.

2015.5.4
An alarm started to sound several times the night before April 30. It happens when temperature gets warm and water temperature exceeds the preset temperature of the heat controller. It is about time to stop heating until the autumn. At the same time it is a good chance to clean the filtering tank of the aquarium. My aquarium has overflow filtering system. So, there is a filtering tank hidden below the main tank as big as the main tank. A pump is pumping water from the filter tank, and the water overflowing from the main tank to the filtering tank.
The filtering tank is hidden in the gray box under the main tank.

The filtering tank under the main tank.  It is also a good place to hide a lot of small stuffs.
I clean it usually once a year since it is a lot of trouble to clean the filtering tank.
Next day, I cleaned the tank after about a year.  This year it took more than five hours to clean the filtering tank. Muscle ache lasted for a few days. While cleaning, an idea came to my mind. Let's try stopping the filtering system.

There are two needs for the filtering.  One is physical filtering that is to remove unnecessary objects physically.  Another mission of the filtering is bio filtering meaning to remove poisonous ammonia created from various waste in the main tank like wish feces by bacteria living in the filter material.  The bacteria changes ammonia to nitric acid that is harmless for fish.  Too much nitric acid results in algea in the tank.  So, nitric acid has to be removed by changing part of water or planting plants that eat the acid.

The overflow system is the most powerful filtering system since it is capable to have a big filtering tank. However, there is a shortcomings, too. One, it is hard to clean.  Second, it is big. Third, it takes big electric power. Four, it is a little noisy.
Five, the most annoying is that it requires fairly often water supply albeit amount of water in whole system is very big. It is preferable to operate without the filtering system.

To explain this, I have to explain more about an overflow system.  The picture below illustrates a very simplified view of an overflow system.  The water from main tank overflows through large pipe to the filter tank. The water goes through two rooms with filters to the third room.  All the waste remains in the first two rooms.  The clean water in the third room is pumped back to the main tank.
An simplified illustration of an overflow aquarium.
When time passes, the water evaporates from the system, and decreases.  While water exists in the third room of the filtering tank, that is marked with the red X, even the total water reduces, the water is pumped to the main tank.  Visibly only the water level of the third tank is decreasing, and the amount of water in this third room is the allowance of evaporation before it requires supply of water from outside of the system. Because when the third room is empty, the pump operates without water and will be overheated.

Going back to my aquarium, the main tank is almost like a jungle on thick soil. It is filled with a lot of plants in the water and over the water.  Also, it has not so many fishes.  I think the bacteria in the soil is enough to process ammonium created by fish, and the nitric acid made will be consumed by the plants.  Thus, I think it is possible to let the small nature in the aquarium makes equilibrium. Of course the evaporated water must be supplied, but it is less problematic compared to the third room of the filtering tank, and period of supplying water is much longer than before.

Five days has passed, nothing changed much.  I did nothing but gave little food for fish, and poured two jugs of water today.  No stink, no increase of algea, no dead fish or shrimp, just some oil film at the surface of the water.

So far, so good.  How will it be in the future gets more interesting.

4) Rice fish vanished. Aquarium layout was changed. - four

2014.7.18

After about a month, the water got cleaner and cleaner.
So, I added some fish.
The day before yesterday, I put ten neon tetra and ten rice fish.

On the day, they were fine.  However, next day there was only one rice fish.
There were one that had been there, and one of the news.  This happened before, so this time I took very long time to adjust water.  But,...

At last, I searched the internet, and found one possible cause that is stream.  This tank is big and have a lot of plants, I keep the stream rather strong.  It is said that rice fish cannot take strong current.
We are taught in the elementary school that rice fish has nature of swimming against currents.  If current is strong, it is said, they continue swimming hard until they die.  OMG.
Then the surviving two are race swimmers, or just lazy guys?

However, it is my character that do not give up there.  Today, I bought twenty albino growlights.  These would be OK since they are one of tetras.  But, still small, I wish they won't be eaten by the others.

I noticed at the fish shop that there are many fish named as balloon something.  There are one species in my tank, but many kinds there.  Like balloon molly, balloon moenkhausia, balloon sumatra, etc.  I am afraid they are artificially gene mixed.  Horrible, horrible.
