色違い　Difference in color

金魚草をよく見ると、これはこぼれ種の第三世代なのだが、元々よりも色の変化が多いことに気づいた。元々は3種類だったのに。

Looking closely at my snapdragons that are third generation by natural seeding, I noticed there are more varieties than the original ones that were three types.

これは赤。

This is a red one.

これはピンク?
This is a pink (?) one.

ピンクだから白の部分が多い。
Pink but larger white portions.

２種の比較

Comparing the two types.

黄色
Yellow.

濃い黄色
Dark yellow.

朝食の後、俺はいつものように庭を歩きながら、パンジーの花ガラを摘み、窓際に置いてあったカルーナ・チェッカーベリーの鉢を咲いてきた金魚草の鉢と入れ替えて、その鉢は日陰に移し、木々の新芽を摘んで、バラの新芽のアブラムシを捜索したりしていた。
After breakfast, as usual I was walking in the garden pinching finished flowers of pansies, exchanging a pot of calluna and checker berry near a window with a pot of flowering snapdragon, move the pot to a shady area, pruning young leaves on trees, and searching aphids on young leaves of rose.

チェッカーベリーの実は皆ヒヨドリに食われてしまった。
Berries of checker berries were all taken by bulbuls.

ヨーロッパナラは芽が沢山出て来て、ちょっとうっかりしていると下が日陰になってしまう。
French Oak vividly grow new branches, and the ground under it gets shady if I fail to monitor the situation.

その時偶然、先日外に出した月下美人の鉢を見た。葉に何か付いている。カマキリの卵嚢だ。冬中内の中で育てていたのに気が付かなかったのだ。良かった〜! もし外に出していなかったら、部屋の中はカマキリの赤ちゃんと妻の叫び声で満たされているところだった。

Then by chance, I looked at a pot of queen of the night I brought out a few days ago. There is something on the leaf. An egg sac of mantis! I never noticed this while I was keeping the pot indoor whole winter. Lucky me. If I did not bring this outside early enough, the room would have been a full of baby insects and scream of my wife.

庭にはもう一つ卵があるのを知っている。この木のてっぺんだ。この枝は冬に切りたいと思っていたが、この卵嚢のために我慢していたのだ。

There is another egg sac that I know in the garden. At the top of this tree. Even though I was planning to prune this branch in winter, I waited not to because of this egg sac.

迷信かも知れないが、カマキリが高い所に卵を産んだ年は雪が沢山振ると言われている。この冬は例外的に暖かかったので、このカマキリの母親は大きな間違いをしたと思っていた。でも、もう一人正しく暖冬を予感していた母がいたということだ。
I don't know if it is a myth or not, but it is said if a mantis lay eggs at a higher place, it would snow heavily in the winter. This past winter was exceptionally warm in this area. So, I thought the mother laid the egg at the top of the tree made a big mistake. But there was another mother that correctly predicted the warm weather.

Brave or Too merry? 勇敢、それとも浮かれ過ぎ?

一月ほど前、デンドロビウムの一鉢がうまく咲かなかったと書いた。しかし、運良くそれは間違いだった。葉芽だと思っていたのが前部花になった。最終的に、大体20輪位の花。
About a month ago, I wrote that one of my dendrobium did not succeed in flowering. However, fortunately it was a miscomprehension. The bud that I thought to be leaves turned out to be all flowers. Probably about twenty of flowers in total.

まだつぼみもたくさんある。
More buds for flowers.

咲くといえば、これは金魚草のプランターだ。びっくりするのは、これがぜんぶこぼれ種から自然に生えてきたということ。数年前に一度だけ何鉢かを買っただけ。その後は毎年こぼれ種から育っている。金魚草は寒さが好きで、冬の間も育つ。早春を飾るのに準備万端だ。
Talking about flowering, this is a planter of snapdragons. The amazing thing is these are all growing naturally from self-sawn seeds. I bought several pots only once a few years ago. Every year after that they grow from self-sawn seeds. Snapdragon likes cold weather, and grows even in winter. They are ready to decorate early spring.

寒さといえば、今週の天気は冬に戻ったようで、北風がビュービュー吹いている。しかし、どこにも勇敢で浮かれたた奴はいるものだ。山吹がたった一輪昨日咲いた。おっと、ちょっと早いぞ。
Talking about cold days, this week the weather is like back to winter, and north wind is blowing fiercely. But, there is a brave and merry one always. Only one kernia flower bloomed yesterday. Ooops, too early.

When I came home　うちに帰ってみたら

20日位家を留守にしていた。家に帰るまで、庭の可愛い植物たちがどうなったかずっと心配だった。出かける前に出来るだけのことはした。ポットはスプリンクラーの水と太陽が当たるように配置したし、スプリンクラーも出来るだけ広い範囲をカバーするように調節した。ノズルを幾つか追加したくらいだ。
I have been out of home for about twenty days. Until I came home, I was worrying what would happen to my lovely plants in the garden. I did what I could as much as possible before I left. I located pots that are covered by spray of sprinklers and sunshine. I adjust the sprinklers so that the spray would cover area as wide as possible. I even added several nozzles.

家に帰って、見たのはこれだ。
After I came back, these were what I found.

菊波は花を咲かせていた。
Faucarias had flowers.

ホーリーは鳥に突かれることもなく色づき始めていた。
Holly fruits started to color without pecked by birds.

ホトトギスはまだ咲いていて、沢山の種をつけていた。
Toad lily were still flowering and produced many seeds.

金魚草が咲き始めていた。それは驚くようなことではないのだが、驚くべきはこれがこぼれ種で育った3世代目ということだ。
Snapdragon started to bloom. The flower is not so surprising, but what is surprising is this is the third generation that grew from self-sown seedling.
