ビザー・プランツ Bizarre plants

少し前から面白い英単語だと思っていた「ビザール」という英語をカタカナでも時々見るようになった。といってもビザール・プランツという用法だけである。例えばこれである。

Recently I encounter more often with the word "bizarre" in Japanese. But, it is only in the phrase "bizarre plants".  An example is this.


アルファベットで書くとbizarreである。bizzareは綴り間違いらしいが結構よく見られる。Net辞書では、奇怪な、異様な、信じられないと訳してある。私はこの単語のくだけた感じとビザー・プランツというのは「珍奇植物」という意味だから、そのコンテキストで考えると、「キモカワ」が訳としてふさわしいような気がする。本来は本当に気持ち悪いという意味もあるようだが、ビザール・プランツの場合は、使われる 知対象の植物から考えて「キモカワ」ではないかと思うのである。

Regardless of dictionaries, I think proper translation in the phrase "bizarre plants" is "kimokawa" meaning "creepy but cute" that is recently invented by youngsters.  It is because considering the features of the plants addressed.

このビザール・プランツ、名前の通り、キモカワなら何でも良いのであって、はっきりした定義はないのだと思う。愛好家は結構いるし、上記の本にも出てくるように病膏肓の人も多いようだ。そういう私も気がつくと最近はこの手の植物を集める傾向にある。

As the name shows, every "bizarre" plant can be included. So, I think there is no definition at all. There are many lovers of the bizarre plants, and also some of them were taken hold of the plants as shown in the book indicated above. I notice that I am also inclined to collect those.

 これは麋角羊歯の仲間だが、ビザールに入れられたりします。じわじわ毎年大きくなるし、確かに奇妙。

This is one of a stag horn fern. Sometimes it is grouped as a bizarre plant. It grows little by little every year, and surely eerie.

 エアプランツもビザールである。根は体を固定するためだけで、水分は全身から吸収するらしい。

Airplants are bizarre, too. Their roots are only for holding their bodies to some fixed objects. Absorbing water is performed with their whole bodies.

しかし、最近特にビザールと私が思うのは、所謂塊根・塊茎植物。饅頭のような塊茎からそれとは似ても似つかぬ茎や葉が出てくるのである。

However, what I think specially bizarre are so called codex plants. They, from their bun-like codexes, grow stems and leaves nothing imaginable from their strange codex. 

 これは日本では亀甲竜という格好いい名前がついているが、英語では象の脚。この醜い饅頭からクネクネした蔓と♡型の葉が出てくるからたまらない。また、夏の間は葉も茎も枯れて、秋になると芽が出てきて翌年の夏前まで育つのだ。
This has a handsome name "Kikkouryu" in Japanese, but in English "elephant's foot". It is absolutely adorable as it grows winding vines and heart-shaped leaves from the ugly bun. Also, the leaves and vines are die down during summer, and it starts to grow a new stem from autumn until the next summer.

これは秋になると芽が出るマッソニア。地中に饅頭が隠れている。この新芽だと対してビザールではないが、・・・

This is Massonia starting to grow leaves in autumn. The bun is hidden under the soil. This new leaves are not so bizarre, but...

 葉が広がるとビザール度(?)が一気に上る。我が家では咲いたことがないが、葉が2枚で真ん中に雄蘂だけのような箒状の花が咲くのも益々ビザールである。

After it opens leaves, the degree of bizarre (?) rises really much. It makes more bizarre that it blooms a flower that looks like a broom consisting of only gynostemiums.

 逆に夏だけ葉が出る物もある。アデニウムはプルメリアと同じくキョウチクトウ科だ。根元の太いのが無ければ葉も花も只のキョウチクトウだなと思えてきて、ビザール度が下がった。

To the contrary, there are plants that grow leaves only during warm seasons. Adenium is a plants in the Apocynaceae family same as plumeria. It became less bizarre as I noticed the leaves and flowers are same as just an oleander if it does not have a thick base.

右後ろは断崖の女王。これも夏型。以前購入した株は水をやらなさすぎてあっという間に干からびた。結構水が好きなのである。葉に隠れて見えないが、地表にまんじゅうがある。
The one at the back right is a sinningia. This is also summer growing. The other one I bought before soon died as I spared water too much. It likes watering. There is a bun on the surface that is hidden by the leaves.

次も夏型だ。地中に玉ねぎのような饅頭が隠れている種類だ。このような奇妙な葉が春に出て秋には枯れる。日本語では蒼角殿。英語だと木登り玉ねぎ。(笑)

Next one is also summer growing. The codex like an onion is hidden under the soil. Strange leaves gown in spring and dies in autumn. In Japanese it is "Sokakuden". In English it is climbing onion. ;-)

セイリギアは白い毛の生えた柱サボテンみたいだなと思って買った。葉(?)、茎(?)の姿もビザールなのだが、後から地中に塊根が有ることを知り、益々ビザール。

I bought this seyrigia as I thought it looked like a pillar cactus. Leaves? or stems? look bizarre enough. But, it got more bizarre as I found this has a codex.

見慣れてそれほど思わなくなっているが、塊茎の無い多肉も十分ビザールである。

Succulents not having codex are bizarre enough even though I don't think they are as they are too familiar to me.

ディッキアは多肉ではない。ブラジルの川岸の岩の割れ目などに生えているらしい。だから、水もそれなりにあげないといけない。しかしビザールさは負けない。

Dyckia is not a succulent. They grow on the cracks of rocks near rivers in Brazil. So, I have to water as their wilderness.

今までの植物は皆暖地系で、この辺では冬には室内に入れないと死んでしまう。しかし、とりこまなくてもいい日本自生にもビザールと言えるような植物は色々ある。その例もあげておこう。

左はアオネカズラ。シダの仲間で、その根の通りキモい青い根が地表を走る。

右はイワヒバの龍王獅子。シダのようだが分類上はシダではない。

The plants shown above are all grows in warm areas. They die where I live if I do not have them indoor in winter. But, there are plants that are original in Japan and need not be stay indoor also that can be said to be bizarre plants. I will list some of them. 

The left one is "Aonekazura", Polypodium niponicum. It is a kind of fern. As the Japanese name shows it grows bizarre green roots on the surface of the soil. 

The right one is "Ryuouzishi" a kind of selaginella. It looks like a fern, but it is not taxonomically. 

最後はマツバラン。こちらはシダの仲間だが、ずっと原始的だ。茎だけしかない。文字通り「根も葉もない」のだが、本当である。（笑）

The last one is "matsubaran", whisk fern. This is a fern, but far primitive. It only has stems. No roots and no leaves.
