うちの狭い庭にはふさわしくない木が何本かある。大きくなりすぎるのだ。歳を取るに連れ、放って置くともう切れなくなってしまうくらい育ってしまうのではないかと心配になってきた。数週間前に、今年はこれらの木を抜本的に選定しようと決めた。しかし、心配は、太い枝を切り落とすと下にある木や鉢、場合によっては家そのものも炒めてしまうのではないかということだった。そこで、切った枝がぶら下がるように、ロープで他の木に枝を縛り付けてから切ることを計画してきた。
I planted several trees that are not suitable for our small backyard. I mean they grow too large. As I got older, I feel worried that it would be too late for me to prune if left as they were. A few weeks ago, I decided to prune them this year drastically. However, the problem is, if cut large branches, they would damage small trees, pots, or even our house itself. I planned to tie the branches with rope to the other trees before I cut them so that the rope would hang the cut branches.
今日、一連の剪定の試行第一号をユーカリで決行した。ユーカリは柔らかいので切りやすく、練習向きだと思ったからだ。
Today, I conducted the first trial of the serial pruning for our Eucalyptus. Because it is the softest and easy to cut. It is best for my practice.
いつものように、切る前の写真を撮るのを忘れたが、これが第一剪定後の写真だ。切った枝が重すぎて運べないといけないので、この木は３回に分けて剪定しようと考えていた。兎に角、これが第一剪定後で枝はまだロープと枝に絡まっていた美男葛のツルでぶら下がっている。
As always I forgot to take a picture before pruning, but this is the one after the first pruning. I planned to prune the tree in three turns to make each cut branch as light as I could carry.
Anyway this is after the first and the branch is still hanged by a rope and also ivies that are clinging to the branch.

二回目の剪定の後、オオスズメバチが来たので一時中断。この蜂は毎日何度も巣の材料をとりにこの木に来る。取った後どこか遠くに飛んで行くようなので、これとは戦わないことにしている。ハチは私の剪定を特に気にしていないようだ。
After the second cut, a Japanese giant hornet came, and I had to have a break. She visits this tree many times a day to obtain material for her nest. Since she flies away somewhere far, I had decided not to fight with her. She looked like not to mind my drastic work.

スズメバチが去って、これが第二剪定された枝の写真。
After the hornet had gone, this is the pic of the second cut.
使った道具は、最初の写真に写っていた脚立以外には鋸、鋏、ロープだけ。このロープは昔キャンプをしていた頃タープを立てるのに使っていたロープ。
All I used were the hand saw, scissors, and a rope besides the ladder shown in the first picture. The rope was one of them that were used to tie our tarp tent when we camped many years ago.
ロープの反対側はこの木に繋いでおいた。
The other end of the rope was tied to this tree.
この木を利用していた生物が他にもいた。小さい蟻。彼らはあまり嬉しくない様子。
There were other creatures that took advantage of the tree. Small ants. They look not favoring my work.

第一剪定枝と第二剪定枝。

第三剪定後。この木は多分生き残ってここから若枝が出てくると信じている。切り口で直径が13cmだった。
After third cut. I believe the tree would survive and grow some young branches from the trunk. The diameter at the cutting is about 13 cm.
