一昨日までは、一週間以上雨が続いた。庭の鉢植えが腐ってしまわないかと心配だつた。私の心配を他所に、鉢植えたちは結局秋の日の光の中で元気なようだ。

Until the day before  yesterday, it has been rain for more than a week. I was afraid all the pots outside would go rotten.  Regardless of my fear, it looks like pots looks great in an autumn sun after all. 

私は秋の庭仕事を再開した。供したことの1つは秋にやろうとは考えていなかったことだ、というのは早春にやるべきだと思っていたからだ。あまり確信はなかったので今日幾つかのサイトを調べてみると、今やるのだと知った。何かというと春に買って小さめの鉢に植えたプリムラの株分け、植え替えだ。去年までは、うちのプリムラは夏の間に弱るか枯れてしまう事が多かった。いつもやや乾かし気味に育てていたのだ。しかし、今年は毎日水をやり日陰で育ててきた、それが結果的に良かったようだ。その結果、鉢は満杯になった。

I resumed my autumn work in the garden. One thing I did today was not planned to be done in autumn because I had thought it should be done in early spring. As I was not sure about the time I checked several net site and found I had to do it now. It is repotting and division of a primula that I bought this spring and planted in a rather small pot. Until last year, primulas in my garden mostly got very weak or die during summer. I was keeping them in rather dry condition. But, this year I kept it watered everyday and in the shade, and it turned out very good for it. As a result the pot was filled. 

始める前は、幾つかに分けて少し大きい鉢に植え戻すつもりだった。しかし、株分けしてみると、10株以上が皿の上に残った。鉢は1つでは足りない。これが、植え替えた内の二鉢だ。

Before I started, I planned to divide the plant into several parts and plant them back to one larger pot. After I divided them, however, I found myself with more than ten small plants in a tray. Then, I needed more than one pots.

これが残りの2鉢。私の作業はがさつなので、幾つかの株は根が殆どなかったり、全く無かったりだった。小さな茶色の鉢にあるのがその根が殆どないという奴らだ。葉まで少ない。どうなるか暫くはよく見ていないといけない。

These are the other two of them. As my work is not so delicate, some of the plants were divided with very little or no roots. The ones in a small brown pot are the ones with scarce. Even leaves are scarce. I have to watch carefully for a while how they will be. 

 他の植物はいつもの秋のごとく普通に育っている。この亀甲竜と呼ばれるのは長い夏の休眠の後バリバリ育っている。
Others are as normal as the regular autumn. This one called elephant's foot grow a vine fiercely after long sleep during hot summer.

リンドウもやっと咲き始めた。葉は少々いたんでいる。
Gentians started flowering at last with some damage on leaves.

アガベをもう一つ門の外に植えた。
I planted one more agave outside of the gate.

アガベって棘で門を守っているみたいに見えない?
Aren't agaves looking like protect our gate with those spines?

これは、セイリギア・フンベルティという名前だ、よく育っているのは枝2本だけだ。なんとかもう少し背が低く枝が広がるように育てられないものだろうか?もっと日照が必要なのかな?
This one named Seyrigia humbertii grows well, but only these two branches. Is I wonder there is anyway making it grow with more but shorter branches. Maybe more sunshine?

忙しき日は続く Busy days continue.

前にも書いたように、秋は園芸家にとって最も忙しい季節の一つである。ここ数日でもう一鉢のクリスマスローズと紫陽花を2本地植えにした。この紫陽花は今年春に静岡県で買った物だ。
As I had wrote before, autumn is one of the busiest season for gardeners. In these few days, I planted one more lenten rose, and two hydrangeas on the ground. The hydrangeas were what I bought this spring in Shizuoka prefecture.

それからアメリカサイカチの枝を少し切った。この秋にしなくてはならない剪定のほんの内部だ。
Then, I also cut several branches of honey locust. Just a little parts of many pruning that I have to do in this autumn.

友人の家庭に差し上げる多肉を7鉢作った。
I arranged seven succulents pots as gifts to my friend family.

また、庭にある鉢をあちこちと動かした。秋の涼しくなった太陽に最適な場所にするためだ。明日はこの春に挿し木した紫陽花の苗を4鉢、別の友人のご家庭に差し上げることになっている。
I have to move pots in the garden here and there so that the location of them suit well to cooler autumn sun. It is planned that four young hydrangeas that I propagated this spring are given to another family tomorrow.

そうすれば、もっと場所が空いて、自由に鉢を動かせるようになる。
After that I will have some more space to move around my pots more freely.

季節が涼しくなるに連れもっとやらなくてはならないことがある。忙しい日々は続く。
As season gets cooler, more work need to be conducted. Busy days will continue.

台風12号がもたらした涼しい風で秋がもう遠くないことを感じさせてくれた。
By a cool wind the typhoon #12 brought had us feel like autumn is not far.

秋、それは園芸家にとって春と同じく繁忙と興奮の季節だ。我々は日本の夏の酷暑に耐えてきた植物たちを世話して疲弊からの回復に手助けしなくてはならない。一つの方法は植え替えが必要な植物は植え替えを。もう一つは肥料をくれるのだ。また夏の間に乱雑に伸びた木の枝や枯れかけた一年草を剪定しなくてはならない。その一方、蘭については来るべき花の季節にそなえて準備させなくてはならない、潅水の量を減らしたり肥料を停止したりしてだ。私は蘭をスプリンクラーの水の当たるところに置いているので、位置を動かすか水の量を調節しなくてはならない。もっと先には、枯れた多肉を取り除かなくてはならないし、今年は贈り物用にいくつか小さい鉢に植え替えもしよう。また、冬に室内に入れる鉢植えのサイズを枝を切ったりして小さくすることでその準備をしなくてはならない。もう一つの方法は切った枝などから挿し木をすることだ。これは秋早くからしなくてはならない。挿し木で小さい株を作ることは部屋のスペース節約に役立つ。等々。
Autumn, it is a season of busyness and exiting at the same time for gardeners as much as spring. We have to take care of plants that have been bearing the heat of Japanese summer to help them recover from their exhaustion. One way is replanting the plants that need ones. Another is feeding fertilizer. We have to prune branches of trees and dying annuals that wildly grew during summer. On the other hand, for orchids we have to have them prepare for the coming flowering season by reducing irrigation and stop fertilizing. I keep them under the water sprinkler, so I have to change their location or adjust the amount of water. Later on, we have to remove dead succulents and this year I will replant some succulents into small pots to make gifts. Also late in autumn, we have to prepare pots that have to be brought indoor during winter reducing the size of them by pruning branches. Another way is propagate plants from cuttings. Making smaller new plants from cutting is a good way to utilize spaces in my room. This must be begun earlier in autumn.  Etc., etc....

今日、私はこのタスクの一つを開始した。私はレンテンローズの株を一つ地植えにしたのだ。これは去年の春買った二鉢の内の一つだ。これらをポットの中で今まで育ててきた。何故なら、変化していく環境に対して位置を動かすことにより保護しやすいからだ。しかしある程度以上大きくなった後はポットで維持していくことは難しい。今日がその時だと思ったのだ。一つのタスクは終了したが、私にはまだもう一つのレンテンローズと3鉢の紫陽花がある。まず植える場所を探さねばならない。道のりは遠い。
Today, I just started one of the tasks. I planted one of potted lenten roses on the ground. This is one of two pots I bought in the spring last year. I have been keeping them in pots because plans in the pots are easier to protect from varying environment by just relocating them. But, after it grows to certain size it becomes hard to keep in pots. I thought today was the time. While one task was done, I still have one more lenten rose and three hydrangea pots to plant. I have to find spaces for them first. Long way to go.

それは置いといて、もう一つしなくてはならないことがあった。秋は涼しくなり雨も多くなるので、植物、特に巻柏やバラ、は細菌にやられて病気になりがちだ。殺菌剤を巻柏にかけた。
Leaving that aside, there was another task to be done. Since autumn is cooler and we have more rain, the plants, especially selaginellas and roses, tend to be affected by germs and get sick. I poured some germicide over my selaginellas.

この若い娘は「楊貴妃」という名、色が変わり始めた。
This young girl called "Yang Kuei Fei" is looking well and started to turn the color.

これは歌舞伎や日本舞踊で有名な「鏡獅子」の名前をもらっている。それも色が変わり始めた。
This is called "Lions in a mirror", a name of Japanese traditional Japanese dances and "Kabuki" plays. It also started to change the color of leaves.

これはまだ生きてはいるが夏から元気がない。鉢が大きすぎるかもしれない。
This looks sick since summer although it still lives. Maybe the pot is too large.

いずれにしても色々とすることが多い。
Anyway I have a lot to be done.

ジャングル? Jungle?

私の水槽の高さは60cmあるが、水面の高さはその40%しかない。その理由は、本で見たアクア・テラリウム水槽に憧れていたからだ。アクア・テラリウムとは文字通りアクアリウムとテラリウムの混合だ。その概念は水辺の景色を再現することにある。水中と陸上を一つの水槽に作るのだ。それで、初めは80%位まで水を入れていた。この時はテラリウムというより水の少ないアクアリウムという感じだった。その後10年以上掛けて、良い水辺の景色を求めて水の高さを減らしてきた。まるで気候変化のために湖の水が減っていくように。

My tank has the hight of 60cm, but water line is only 40% of it. The reason is I had always wanted to own an aqua-terrarium tank that I saw in books. Aqua-terrarium means a mixture of an aquarium and terrarium obviously. The concept is mimicking a scenery of waterside. Having water and land in the same tank. So from the beginning I filled 80% of it with water. At that time, it was a more like aquarium with less water than a terrarium. Gradually, I decreased the hight of water searching a good scenery of waterside taking more than ten years. It has been like a lake loses water gradually by the change of climate.

水槽の後景は水上の葉でジャングルのように満たされている。色々な種類の植物がこの条件で育っている。一部は水中の底土から生えており、一部は直接水に接すること無く、軽石や流木の上に生えている。多肉、シダ、ベゴニア、食虫植物。特にベゴニアは外においてある物より葉が大きくなり、この環境が非常に気に入っているようだ。

The back half or background of the tank is filled by leaves growing in the air like a jungle. Various types of plants can grow in this condition. Some are growing from the bottom soil in the water, and some are on the porous rocks or driftwoods without directly touching water. Succulents, ferns, begonia, and carnivorous. Especially the begonia has larger leaves than the one outside, and looks it like the condition very much.

 

5月に、そうだあれは5月だったのだ、月日の立つのは早いもの、ドクダミと半夏生を切って水中化させるために植えた。
In May; yes it was May, how fast the days go; I cut some of chameleon plants and lizard's tails growing in the garden, and planted them to have them submerged as

両方共元気だ。しかし、私の意に反して唯の抽水植物として育っている。見たところ庭にある兄弟たちと何ら変わりない。私の希望には簡単にはこたえてくれない。
The are fine. Against my will, however, they has been growing just emergent seeming nothing different from their siblings in the garden. They do not obey my wish easily.

妙な物発見 Unfamiliar THINGS discovered

2016.8.6

我が家は夏の猛烈な暑さの攻撃にされされている。しかし、このベゴニアはまだ花が咲いている。過去には毎年この頃には花は止み、葉も落ちてしまっていた。今年春に行った植え替えが良かったのかもしれない。

Our house is under attack of furious heat of summer. Still, this Begonia blooming, though.  In the past, it had stopped flowering and had dropped all leaves by about this time every year. The repotting I did this spring may have worked well.

よく見ると、妙なものがぶらさがっている。
Looking at closely I found unfamiliar THINGS hanging.

これはもっとよく判る写真だ。種のようだ。これは球根ベゴニアである。種を付けることができるのか? 種は発芽すのか?
This is a clearer picture. Seeds it looks like. This is a bulbous begonia. Can it have seeds? Will the seeds germinate?

幾つかの種はもっと熟した状態だ。
Some of seeds are in more ripen status.

インターネットでコメントを探してみたが答えは見つからなかった。私が世界で初めて発見したのか?
Looking for some comment in the internet gave no answer. Am I the first to find this in the world?

種を幾つか採って蒔いてみた。さて、どうなるかな。
I removed some and planted in soil. Let's see how it will be.

ガーデニングには驚きや初めての経験が沢山だ。
Gardening is full of wonder and new experiences.

爆睡? Dead asleep?

水槽を維持している人は皆、どこからとも無く生えてきて、最悪古代の廃墟を覆う蜘蛛の巣のように水槽を占領してしまう招かれざる藻をどう取り除くかに苦心している。藻はどこにでも生える、底砂の上、石の上、私達が愛でている水草の葉の表面、そして水槽の内側に生えて中を見えなくしてしまう。
All who keep aquariums worry about how to get rid of uninvited algae that grows from nowhere and at the worst case occupy the tank like spider nets over an ancient ruin. It grows everywhere; on the bottom soil, on the stones, over the surface of aquarium plants that we adore, and over the inside of the tank and obscure the inside of the tank.

ある時は、我々は木酢液のような有機剤を使う。藻類はアルカリ性が好きだと言われるからだ。或いは、化学薬品を使ってしまうこともある。しかし私が最も好むのは藻類を好む生き物を入れることだ。ある種の魚、エビ、貝は藻類を食べるが、それぞれ長所・短所がある。
Sometimes we use organic substances like pyroligneous acid as algae is said to like alkaline water, or even sometimes chemicals. However, the method I like is to put some creatures that like to eat algae. Some fish, shrimp, and snails eat algae, but all have pros and cons.

今日の話はこの貝についてだ。淡水水槽の藻類除去によく使われる幾つかの種類の貝がある。今、私の水槽には二種類の貝がいる。両方共私にとっては比較的新しい種類だ。
Todays story is about the snails. There are several snails commonly used as algae eaters in freshwater aquariums. Currently I have two species of them in my tank. Both of them are relatively new to my tank.

最初の貝はフネアマ貝、下の写真で平たい石に張り付いているやつだ。同様な貝より長生きすると言われている、というのは石にしっかり張り付いているので魚に食べられにくいのだ。そう、貝を食べる魚がいる、そして残念ながら私の水槽にいるクラウン・ローチはその１つなのだ。残念な点は淡水の中では繁殖できない、だから時々買い足さなくてはならない。
The first one is freshwater limpets; Latin name Septaria porcellana; that is sticking to the flat stone in the picture below. It lives longer than the similar species because it is more firmly stick to the surface of objects and make it hard to be eaten by fish. Yes, there are some fish that like to eat snail, and unfortunately there is one of them, clown loach, in my tank. The unfortunate point is they do not breed in fresh water, so I have to buy some every now and then.

もう一つは、ヒメタニシ、水の底に転がっているやつだ。これは数週間前に買ったばかり。10個を買い、あまり沢山水槽に入れないように、3つだけ水槽に入れて、残りは庭の池に放り込んだ。こいつらは沢山の藻を食べるので、飢え死ぬまで食べてしまうらしい。この貝も長生きするとのこと、蓋をきちんと閉めて体を守れるかららしい。この種類は淡水で繁殖する。卵を生むのでなく稚貝を産むのだ!
Another one is Mud snail that is lying at the bottom in the picture below. I bought this just a few weeks ago. I bought ten of them, and avoided to put too many in the aquarium by putting only three of them in the aquarium, and the rest were thrown into the pond in the garden. Because, they are said to eat a lot of algae and sometimes they eat all of algae until they starve to die. This snail is also said to live long as it can protect their body tightly with the cap. Also this species breed in fresh water. They lay baby snails instead of eggs!

下の貝はひっくり返っている。初めてこれを見た時は、死んでいると思った、全部だ。その光景を見ているのに絶えられず、全部水槽後方の水草の陰に隠した。しかし、驚いたことに数日後には水槽の前庭に何も心配することはないという風に出てきた。少し心配なのだが、これは爆睡しているだけだと信じるようにしている。
The one below lay upside down. The first time I saw this, I thought they were dead, all of them. As, I could not bear to see the scene, I hid them behind the bush of plants in the tank. But, to my surprise they appeared in the forecourt a few days laters there were noting to worry about. So, even though I feel a little nervous, I try to believe the snail is just dead asleep.

ヒメタニシは昼寝の姿で心配をかけるが、稚貝が水槽の中を動き回る様子を見るのが楽しみという魅力はある。
The mud-snails are making me nervous by their taking nap appearance, but are attractive enough that I look for seeing their babies moving around the tank.

暑い夏が遂にやってきた。今年は夏が何時もより涼しかった。今年の夏は避暑地のようだと思っていた。しかし、遂に数日前から熱波が激しくなった。
The hot summer came at last. This year, summer has been cooler than regular years. I thought this summer was like one in summer resort. But, at last since several days ago, the heat has gone furious.

こんな天候では庭の植物の大半はよく育つ。しかし、花はあまり多くない。何故かと言うと、夏に旅行することが多くて暑い夏に維持することが難しかったため、ペチュニアや朝顔といった夏の一年草を植えなくなってしまったからだ。
In such weather, plants in my garden grow so fast mostly. However, flowers are not abundant in my garden. Because, I stopped planting annuals like petunias or morning glories as we frequently went traveling during summer and so keeping plants during our absence with hot weather were difficult.

妻は窓の側に花を飾るのが好きだ。私に趣味の園芸をさせてくれている理由の１つはそこにあると思っている。だから、暑い夏の間といえども少ない選択肢の中から鉢植えの花を集めてこなくてはならない。
My wife likes to display flowers near the windows of our living room. I think that is one of the reasons she let me continue my gardening hobby. So I have to collect pots with flowers from very few choices even in the hot summer.

今まではクロッサンドラとブルーバタフライと桔梗が咲いていた。

前者二鉢は今も咲いている。いい子たちだ。

一月以上咲いてくれた桔梗は数日前に第一回の花を終えてしまった。次の花までには何週間も待たなくてはならない。
The balloon flower that had been flowering more than a month finished their first series of flowers a few days ago. It would be after some weeks to have them flower the second round.

桔梗が置いてあったスペースを埋めるために何かを持ってこなくてはならかった。

I had to bring something to fill the area where the balloon flower had been.

アナベルはドライフラワーになるための花をまだ付けているが、地植えなので動かすことが出来ない。妻の母から頂いた種から育てたヒマワリはある。しかし、ヒョロヒョロでとても彼らの生涯に花を咲かせるとは思えない。これも動かすことはできないし。
Annabelle still has flowers waiting to be dry flowers, but it cannot be moved as it is planted on the ground. I planted some Sunflowers grew from seeds that were given by my wife's mother. However, they look really frail and does not seem to bear flower in their lives. They cannot be moved either.

最終的に、ジャカランダの鉢を選んだ。花は無いけれど、繊細な葉が他の鉢植えと良いコントラストになると思ったのだ。
Finally, I chose a pot of Jacaranda. Even if it does not have flowers, I thought the fine leaves could be a good contrast against the other plants.

他にバックアップできるような花が無いので、ハラハラするヒビを過ごさなくてはならないようだ。
Since there is no other plants that would back up the space, I had to spend days feeling nervous.
