Leak 漏れた

私の水槽はフィルターも水循環も無しで20日位問題ない。しかし、違う問題を発見した。水漏れだ!!
The fish tank is doing fine without any filtering or any water circulation almost twenty days.  However, I found a different problem.  Water LEAK!!

前回書いたように、水槽の掃除をしてフィルタリングを止めた数日後、メインタンクの下のフィルタ室の床に水が漏れているのを発見した。水漏れが起きているということは余りにもも悪いニュースだったので、その時はフィルタ掃除の時にこぼれた水だと思うことにして、雑巾で拭いておいた。しかし、その数日後にも水はまた戻ってきた。よく見てみると水漏れはオーバフローパイプが通っている主水槽の床の部分から漏れているようだ。
A few days after I cleaned my fish tank and stopped filtering like I wrote previously, I discovered some water in the filter room below the main tank.  As it is too bad news to consider that there was leak, I decided to regard it was water that spilt during my cleaning the filter tank.  However, even several days after I wiped the water, the water came from somewhere.  Looking at closely I found out there was leak at the hole of the main tank where the overflow pipe goes through.

翌朝、近所のホームセンターに行き、濡れ面でも接着できるパテを買ってきた。
Next morning I went to a DIY shop near-by and  bought cement that works for the wet surface.




狭い箱のなかで、しかも二本のパイプが近接して配置されているので、簡単な作業ではなかったが、苦労してパテを塗った結果はこれだ。まあまあかな?
It was not easy to work as it is in a small box and two pipes are located very closely, but I struggled to apply the cement, and the result is this.  Not so bad?

初めは漏れが段々酷くなるのではないかと心配していたが、オーバフローパイプが少しずれているのを見つけて安心した。多分、フィルタを掃除した時に私がやってしまったのだ。これが原因だったようだ。パテを塗る前にこれも直しておいた。
Also, I was worrying that the leak would worsen as time until I found out the real cause of the leak, that was a little dislocation of overflow pipe that probably I did it when I cleaned the filtering tank.  Before I applied the cement, I fixed this too.

9時間経つが、今のところ水漏れはない。
After nine hours, no more leak so far!!

4月30日の前の晩、警報が何度か鳴った。水槽の温度コントローラの温度より水温が上昇するとアラームが鳴るらしい。そろそろ、秋まで水槽のヒータを止める時期だ。同時に、水槽の濾過槽の掃除をする良いタイミングだ。私はオーバーフロー方式の濾過方式を使っている。このため、メインタンクと同じくらいの大きさの濾過槽がメインの水槽の下に隠れている。ポンプが濾過槽からメインタンクに水を組み上げ、オーバーフローした水は濾過槽に戻る。
An alarm started to sound several times the night before April 30. It happens when temperature gets warm and water temperature exceeds the preset temperature of the heat controller. It is about time to stop heating until the autumn. At the same time it is a good chance to clean the filtering tank of the aquarium. My aquarium has overflow filtering system. So, there is a filtering tank hidden below the main tank as big as the main tank. A pump is pumping water from the filter tank, and the water overflowing from the main tank to the filtering tank.

濾過槽を掃除するのは大仕事なので、大抵年に一度くらいしか掃除をしない。翌日、およそ一年ぶりに掃除をした。今年は掃除に5時間以上かかった。その後数日は筋肉痛に悩まされた。掃除をしている時、あるアイデアが湧いた。フィルタを止めてみよう。
I clean it usually once a year since it is a lot of trouble to clean the filtering tank.
Next day, I cleaned the tank after about a year.  This year it took more than five hours to clean the filtering tank. Muscle ache lasted for a few days. While cleaning, an idea came to my mind. Let's try stopping the filtering system.

フィルタは２つの必要性がある。一つは物理濾過で、物理的に不要な物を取り除く。もう一つは生物濾過で、その意味は魚の糞などメインタンクに発生する各種の老廃物から出来る有毒のアンモニアを濾材に増殖しているバクテリアにより除去するということだ。バクテリアはアンモニアを魚に無害な硝酸に変化させる。硝酸が過剰になるとタンクの中に藻が発生する。このため、硝酸は部分的換水や硝酸を消化する植物を植えることにより覗かなくてはならない。
There are two needs for the filtering.  One is physical filtering that is to remove unnecessary objects physically.  Another mission of the filtering is bio filtering meaning to remove poisonous ammonia created from various waste in the main tank like wish feces by bacteria living in the filter material.  The bacteria changes ammonia to nitric acid that is harmless for fish.  Too much nitric acid results in algea in the tank.  So, nitric acid has to be removed by changing part of water or planting plants that eat the acid.

オーバーフローシステムは、大きな濾過槽を持つことができるため、ろ過システムの中で最も高性能である。しかし、欠点もある。一つ、掃除が大変。二つ、大きい。三つ、消費電力が大きい。四つ、少しうるさい。五つ、もっとも厄介なのは、システム全体の水量が大きいにもかかわらず、結構頻繁に水を追加する必要が有ることだ。長期に旅行などするときはこの給水を誰かに頼まねばならず、フィルタ無しで維持できればそれに越したことはない。
The overflow system is the most powerful filtering system since it is capable to have a big filtering tank. However, there is a shortcomings, too. One, it is hard to clean.  Second, it is big. Third, it takes big electric power. Four, it is a little noisy.
Five, the most annoying is that it requires fairly often water supply albeit amount of water in whole system is very big. It is preferable to operate without the filtering system.

この理由を説明するためにはもうすこしオーバーフローシステムについてせつめいしなくてはならない。下の図はオーバーフローシステムを非常に簡単に描いたものだ。メインタンクから溢れた水は太いパイプを通って濾過槽に落ちる。その水は濾材の入った２つの部屋を通って3つ目の部屋に流れてくる。ゴミなどは初めの2室に残る。第３室に来たきれいな水がポンプでメインタンクに戻される。
To explain this, I have to explain more about an overflow system.  The picture below illustrates a very simplified view of an overflow system.  The water from main tank overflows through large pipe to the filter tank. The water goes through two rooms with filters to the third room.  All the waste remains in the first two rooms.  The clean water in the third room is pumped back to the main tank.

時間がたつと、水はシステムから蒸発して減少する。X印で示した第３室に水がある内は、水の総量が減少しても水はメインタンクに送られる。見たところ、第３室の水だけが減少していくように見える。そして、外部から水を供給することが必要になる許容蒸発量は第３室の水量だということになる。何故なら、第３室が空になると、ポンプは空運転になり加熱してしまうからだ。
When time passes, the water evaporates from the system, and decreases.  While water exists in the third room of the filtering tank, that is marked with the red X, even the total water reduces, the water is pumped to the main tank.  Visibly only the water level of the third tank is decreasing, and the amount of water in this third room is the allowance of evaporation before it requires supply of water from outside of the system. Because when the third room is empty, the pump operates without water and will be overheated.  

話を戻すと、私の水槽は厚い底砂の上にあるジャングルのようだ。水中も水上もたくさんの植物で満たされている。それに、水槽の大きさの割には、あまり沢山の魚がいない。思うに、底床中にいるバクテリアが魚から出るアンモニアを処理するに十分であり、硝酸は植物が吸収できるのではないだろうか。というわけで、私の水槽中の小さな自然は平衡状態を保てるのではないかと思ったのだ。勿論、蒸発する水は補わなくてはならないが、フィルタの第３室に比べればメインタンクでの減少はあまり問題にはならないから、かなり必要給水期間を長く取れると思う。
Going back to my aquarium, the main tank is almost like a jungle on thick soil. It is filled with a lot of plants in the water and over the water.  Also, it has not so many fishes.  I think the bacteria in the soil is enough to process ammonium created by fish, and the nitric acid made will be consumed by the plants.  Thus, I think it is possible to let the small nature in the aquarium makes equilibrium. Of course the evaporated water must be supplied, but it is less problematic compared to the third room of the filtering tank, and period of supplying water is much longer than before.

５日が過ぎたが、あまり変化はない。少々の餌やりとジャグ２杯の水追加以外は何もしていない。悪臭もなく、藻も増えていないし、死んだ魚や海老もなく、少々表面に油膜が出てきた位だ。
Five days has passed, nothing changed much.  I did nothing but gave little food for fish, and poured two jugs of water today.  No stink, no increase of algea, no dead fish or shrimp, just some oil film at the surface of the water.

今のところ大丈夫。さあこれからどうなるか、面白くなってきた。
So far, so good.  How will it be in the future gets more interesting.

嬉しいが困る I feel happy but troubled

しばらく前に知り合いからお土産としてジャカランダの種（実?）を頂いた。
漢方薬のような雰囲気だ。
A while ago, we were given seeds or a dried fruit? of jacaranda tree as an souvenir by one of our acquaintances.

２つに割ると中はこうなっている。
左側は種を外してしまったが、初めは右のように種が沢山ついていた。

ネットで調べてみたら、結構皆さんやっているようで、情報には困らない。
4月初め頃に、育苗ポットに土を入れて撒いた。しばらくするとカビなのか放線菌なのかが生えてしまった。
Searching internet, I found it is fairly popular to seed jacaranda, and was able to find plenty of information.  In early April, I seeded them in plastic pots with soil.  After a while, fungi or actinomycete started to grow.

ある朝よく見ると、その内の幾つかから芽だ。
One morning, looking closely, I found several sprouts appeared in some of the pots.

 一つのポットに3つ位づつ撒いた。結構高い率で発芽するようだ。
I seeded about three seeds in each pot.  The probability seems fairly high.

芽が出てくれると嬉しいけど、冬は屋内で育てないといけない。今から置き場所を悩んでいる。
種はまだ沢山あるから、欲しい人には差し上げます。
I feel happy to see the sprouts.  However, I have to keep them in the house during winter, I feel troubled where to keep them.
There remain plenty of seeds.  I am happy to share them if anybody would like to try.

去年の6月に送別会を開いてもらった。
これが、その時に貰った花束。
Last June, my college held a farewell party for me.
This is the bouquet presented to me.

 今日の主役はこのベゴニア・マソニア。またの名をアイアンクロス。
花束は大事にしていたが、一つづつ弱いものからダメになっていく。
だんだん少なくなって・・・、カラーは結構長持ちした。
Today's story features this Begonia masoniana.  A synonym is iron cross.  I took a good care of the bouquet, but one by one the flowers and leaves have gone.  Fewer and fewer they became, Calla was one of them stayed healthy long.

ベゴニアはこのまま枯らしてしまっては勿体無いなと、葉ざし（葉脈挿し）というのを試してみた。葉を半分に切って、中心の葉脈を土に浅く埋めるように小さな鉢に植えた。
何ヶ月も何も起きなかったが、ある日鉢の裏を見たら根がびっしりとあふれていた。これはイケるかなと、大きな鉢に植え替えた。
  I thought it is pity to have the begonia gone in a vase, I  buried a half of the leaf in shallow soil in a small pot.  Nothing happened until I found a lot of roots pouring from the bottom of the pot a few months later.  I felt promising and repotted it to a larger pot.

　それからまた半年くらい諦め気味の日々が過ぎ、春がきた。春だからもしかしたら芽が出るかと少々期待していたら、数日前から土の上に白い毛のようなものが見えていた。カビでも生えたかな、その内とってやらんとな、程度に思っていた。
　今朝見たら、カビの色が変わっている。よく見ると、カビではない。老眼でも判る新芽が出てきたのだ。
  It has passed almost a half year of  reconciling days, and spring has come.  I was a little expecting that a new leaf may come out since spring is such a season.   A few days ago, I saw a white hairy stuff on the surface.  I thought it might be mold, and had to remove soon.
  This morning, the hairy stuff changed the color.  Looking closer, it is not mold.  Even with my old eyes, I recognized it is a new leaf.

9ヶ月以上が過ぎている。なんという辛抱強さだろうか。根茎を成長させるまで葉を出さなかったのだろうか。こちらも我慢してよかった。

It has passed more than nine months.  What patience!  I wonder it has been growing rhizome before starting a leaf.  It was good that I did not give up.

  もう一つ、この赤いドラセナも葉ざしにしてみたが、根が出なかったので諦めた。
  I tried to propagate this red dracaena, but it did not grow any roots, and I gave up.

今日は梯子だ! I crawled!

2014.11.1

11月初日は雨で明けた。

朝から予定どおりインフルエンザの予防注射。なじみのお医者さんでブチュっとやってもらった。色々面倒なアンケートを事前に書く割には、注射はシンプルだ。このお医者さん、植物が結構好きで、診察室の出窓は観葉植物の温室のようになっている。最近は多肉に手を出したがうまくいってないらしい。巻柏の話は聞いたことがないので、やっていないのだろう。

The first dawn of November was rainy.

We went for vaccination against influenza as planned.  We got shots at our familiar home doctor.  The shot is easy although the written confession before is really complicated.  By the way, the doctor likes plants.  So, a huge bay window of his clinic is a gorgeous greenhouse.  Recently, I heard he started succulents, but it is not going well.  Since I have never heard about selaginella from him, I guess he does not have them. 

今日から、名古屋支部の巻柏展。そして、今年は東海支部も同じ日にやっていることを知った。比較的近いので梯子をすることにした。

From today, there held a selaginella exhibition of the Nagoya branch.  And, this year, I found the one of the Tokai branch was held on a same day.  The location is fairly close, so I decided to exhibition-clawl.

名古屋支部の展示会は庄内緑地公園にある庄内緑地グリーンプラザ。秋の巻柏は紅葉が目玉だな。我が家の鉢とは似ても似つかぬような艶やかな色彩が展示されている。春から夏にかけて、太陽に当てながら、当て過ぎす、その具合がポイントらしい。

The one of the Nagoya branch was held at Shonai Green plaza.  Colored leaves are key points of Selaginella in autumn.  Glamorous pots were displayed that were far different from ones at my home.  The point is that from spring to summer they must be kept in sunshine but not too much, they say.

今まであまり目立たなかったが、今回は石付けが幾つか出されていた。巻柏以外の植物も寄せ植えされている。

Until this year, I did not notice, but this time several ones planted on rocks were displayed.  Plants other than selaginella were together.

で、お楽しみの即売会だが、今回は色々迷ったあげくに一つだけ手に入れた。

Well, as for my favorite shopping, I bought just one this year after wondering which one to pick.  This is the one with small dense leaves with yellow and red color.  Isn't it nice?

 この後、東海支部の展示会が行われている日本ライン花木センターに回った。こちらは会員数が少ないのか規模は小さかったが、こんなのを見つけたので、買っておいた。丈夫で成長も早いらしい。
Next, I went to Japan Rhine flower and tree center where the exhibits of Tokai branch was held.  The size of the show was much smaller, but I found this pot and bought.  They say this is hardy and grows fast.

 巻柏展は、日本ライン花木センターの一角、せり市場での開催だったが、残りの販売場所はいつも通り。せっかく来たのでぐるぐるっと回ってみた。
 すると、そっちにこんなのがあった。これも育てれば見事になるはず、とゲット。
The exhibit was at the flower auction marketplace.  The other shops were open as usual.  Since I came this far, I walked around the shops.  Then, I found this.  This should grow great if I am good.

そして、巻柏ではないが、多肉コーナーで、これが目に入った。お安かったのでゲット。豹紋という球根植物らしい。春に花が咲くとか。

And, though this is not a selaginella, I noticed this at the succulent corner.  Since it was cheap, I took this, too.  It is bulbous, and have small flowers in spring.

巻柏は寒くなると綺麗に紅葉することで知られている。

我が家の巻柏は少々違う。

Japanese selaginella is famous for the colored leaves when it gets colder.

Mines are a little different.

他の木の紅葉を借用だ！！　（笑）

They hire colored leaves of some other tree.  lol

持ち主に似て怠惰なのか？

Are they lazy imitating laziness of the owner?

帰ってみれば，When I came home.

2014. 10. 19

旅行に行って留守にしていた。水やりは自動でセットされていたが，台風が２回も来たし，どうなっているのかと心配しながら帰ってみれば，

I have been absent from home while traveling.  Watering was set to be automatic, but there came two big typhoons.  I came home worrying, and this is what I find.

これは，夏に買ったイワヒバの鉢から生えていた芽を植えた鉢。葉っぱはホトトギスみたいだが，小さいからなんだろうと思っていたら，なにやら妙なものになった。ホタルブクロでもないし・・・

This is one of several young leaves parasitizing in the selaginella pot I bought at Tateshina this past summer.  I was not sure what these were although they look like toad lilies but too small.  There is a strange bud like a bellflower, but I have never seen it.  

翌朝正体を現した。やっぱりホタルブクロだ。イワヒバ苗としては少々高かったが，おまけ付きを見ぬいた私の目は大したものだ。と自画自賛。

Next morning it opens.  It IS a toad lily bud.  I just have never seen buds of toad lily.  The price of the selaginella pot was a little too expensive, but it was talent of me that foreseen the freebie. 

出かける時には蕾だったネリネは，満開を過ぎているが，まだ見られる。ゆっくり咲く花で良かった。 

Nerine was still buds, and now it is still flowering although not at the full bloom.

リンドウも徒長苗のようになっていて気になっていたが，なんと見事にたくさん咲いた。リンドウが二年目も咲いたのは初めてだ。 

Gentiana had been not looking good spindly growing, but at my surprise they made a lot of beautiful flowers.  This is my first time that genitana gives flowers over two years.

カランコエは花か新芽か判らないが，何やら２つも伸びてきた。

Kalanchoe has started to grow two shoots whether it may become flowers or pups.

何だか，主人がいないほうがうまく育つみたいだな。

It looks like they grow better without their keeper...
