春の兆し Sign of spring.

早いもので、もう２月です。もうすぐ春です。
春の兆しを見つけに東山植物園・動物園に行きました。
その目的は梅の花を見つけてすぐに達成されてしまいました。
Time goes so fast, it is February now. Soon Spring comes.
I went to Higashiyama botanical garden and zoo to find a sign of spring.
My purpose was soon accomplished by finding flowers of plum trees.

これは三椏です。和紙の原料。

This is a paper bush. Traditional Japanese paper is made from this.

猫柳の蕾も膨らんでいました。
 Pussy willow grew their buds.

椿も咲き始めていましたね。
Some camellia started to flower.

福寿草を一つ見つけました。 まだつぼみですが。
I found one pheasant's eye.  Still it was a bud.

温室の中は何時も春。
It is always spring in the green house.

いい時に行きました。これが本当に開くと、臭くてたまらないのです。
It was a good time. If this flower really opens, it would stink awfully.

続いて、動物園に移動しました。
池は何種類もの鳥に共有されいます。
Next, I moved to the zoo.
In the pond several kinds of birds shared water.

野生動物館やメダカ館に行くのにエスカレーターが使えるとは知りませんでした。歩いたら大変でしょうねぇ。
I did not know there is an escalator to visit wild animal house, and killifish house. It would be a hard work to walk this height.

オオコウモリです。

イモリ数種。
Several types of salamanders.

 帰り道で、この日まで女性専用車両が終日になったのは知りませんでした。おまけに、女性専用乗車口まです。驚き〜!!

On the way back, until this day I did not know that "women only cars" system is all day. And, moreover there is "women only entrance door". Amazing. 

この「乗車口」が何を意味するのかネットを探して、 このサイト を見つけました。そしてこれも。このシステムに反対しているグループがあるらしい。どうやら、このシステムは名古屋市議会議員の一人の発言から始まったらしい。トランプみたいな人はここにもいるなぁ。

To find what this "entrance" stuff mean, I searched internet and found this site. And this. There is a group of people that is against the system. It looks like this was started by one member of city council. Ah, here is another person like Trump.

平成28年度巻柏之銘鑑 FY 2016 Selaginella directory

今日、例年の巻柏之銘鑑が我が家に届いた。昨年最も流行した巻柏が列挙されている。これは日本巻柏連合会発行だ。同様の銘鑑は古くから幾つも発行されたことがある。この種のもので最も古いのは1843年発行だ。今の物は1947年に連合会が発足してから発行されている。1957年までは毎年ではなかったので、本号は64号である。

Today, a copy of annual "Selaginella directory" of the last year was sent to my home. It lists the most popular selaginella species in the last year, and is issued by Japan Selaginella Federation every year. Similar directories were published since long time ago. The oldest one like this was published in 1843. The current series of directories started in 1947 when the federation was founded. It was not every year until 1957, so this is the sixty-four issue.

これらの風雅な名前を見るのは興味深い。幾つかは相撲取りの名前のようである。そして、全く同じ名前が日本人に100年以上愛され続けてきた他の伝統植物の名前にも使われている。巻柏もその一つである。例えば風蘭、万年青、石斛等。多分、これらの名前は日本人感覚を表しているのだと思う。
It is interesting to see the elegance of names. Some of them are like the names of Sumo wrestlers. And, exact same names are used the other traditional plants in Japan that have been loved more than hundred years, and Saleginella is one of them. Examples of them are "Furan", Neofinetia falcata - a kind of orchid- ; "Omoto", Japanese rhodea, "Sekkoku" Dendrobium moniliforme. I think, probably, the names represent the taste of Japonism.

自分の持っている種類をマークしてみた。私の持っていない種類がたくさんあるし、私が持っていてここに載っていないものも多い。マニアと呼ばれるまでの道のりは遠いが、我が庭はマニアになるには狭すぎる。
I marked the species that I own. There are many that I do not have, and at the same time many that are not listed of which I own. Way so far to be called a maniac, but so small my garden is to be a maniac.

昨年の物と比べてみると、今年は新登録が6種(去年は2種)。他のレイアウトはほぼ同じだが、微妙に異なる。
Compared with the last year's issue, this year six were newly registered while it was two in the last year. The other listings are almost same, but a little difference.

私の持っている中で、次のアイテムは載っていないようだ。
陽明殿、青龍、中国之華、天照冠、黄牡丹、紅孔雀、光琳、高麗牡丹、長寿、宝錦、祥鳳、金鶏、天女の舞、明星、大王獅子、光鳳、珊瑚閣
Among what I own, eighteen were not listed this year.

水栽培 Hydroponics

この季節に長いことしていなかったことを試した。ヒアシンスの水栽培だ。子供の頃以来である。根を伸ばす間は暗くしなくてはならないことは知っていた。それで、ダンボールの箱に「注意。中に水栽培」と書いて入れておいた。

This season I tried something that I haven't for a long time. A hydroponics of Hyacinth bulbs. It has been since I was a kid. I knew it has to be kept in the dark while they are growing roos long enough. So I put them in a cardboard box with a sign of "Caution! Hydroponics inside."

それからもう一月以上。根は伸びて芽が現れた。
It has been more than a month. They grew their roots and started to show their buds.

ここまでは良い。私はこいつらを暗闇から出して窓際に置くことにした。 葉と花がその内現れることを期待して。さあ、どうなるか・・・
So far, so good. I decided to take them from the dark and put near a window hoping their leaves and flowers soon. We'll see how they grow.

花といえば、デンドロビウムは花芽を伸ばし始めた。
Talking about flowers, dendrobium started to show the flower buds.

セロジネは今ひとつ不安、これが花芽だか葉芽だか。
I am not sure about Coelogyne whether these are flower buds or leaf buds.

バンダも花芽がついている。
Vandas have flower buds, too.

ケイリドプシスは子どもを出し始めた。昨シーズンまでは子どもが母木を置き換えてしまうまで水をやってはいけないことを知らずに何本かからしてしまった。昨シーズンは母木が完全に赤ちゃんに吸い取られるまで水やりを止めたので生き残った。今が我慢のし時だ。自然に仕事を任せよう。
Cheiridopsis started to grow the babies. Until last season I did not know I have to stop watering while babies replacing their mothers, and let some died. Last season it survived as I stopped watering until a mother plant was completely sucked by her babies. Now it is the time to be patient and let the nature do the job.

プレイオスピロスはまだ子どもを出さない。ちょっと心配。
A Pleiospilos has not started to grow the baby, yet. A little worry.

酉年に鳥の害 Damage by birds in a Bird year

このクレマチスはふゆ咲きである。今年は沢山の蕾を付けた。もうすぐ咲きそうだ。
This Clematis blooms in winter. It has lot of buds this year. They will bloom soon.

だが、近づいて見ると、幾つかの蕾に穴が開いている。誰かが食べたのだ。
But looking closely, some of them have holes. Somebody ate them.

侘助も咲き出した。
Camellia has started to bloom.

これも誰かに食べられている。
 This, too, were eaten by somebody.

私の推測は鳥が食べたのだと思う。 うちには沢山の種類の鳥が来る。
My guess is they were eaten by birds. Many kinds of birds come to our home.

この種は食べないようだ。
They don't look like eating these seeds.

何故かは分からないが、この花も食べない。
Or this flower. I don't know why.

ブルーベリーは秋になっても葉を落とさない。
Blueberry does not drop leaves in autumn.

赤深め残る葉飾る冬の枝
Red deepen, display remaining leaves, branches in winter.

部屋の中ではチランジア二種がもうすぐ咲きそうだ。
In a room, two species of tilandias are almost flowering.

監察医 Medical examiner

 朝からいい天気、したいと思っていた庭仕事を幾つか片付けたいと思った。

一つはスプリンクラーの水路の変更。他の部分は潅水を続けるが冬には水の不要な巻柏の部分だけコック一つで停止できるようにしたいのだ。
Fine day from the morning. I conceived to finish things that I had been wanting to do. One is to modify water route of the sprinkler in my garden. I want to stop watering selaginella in winter by a valve while watering the other part of the garden. 

先日部品は買ってきたのだが、現状認識に間違いがあり、今日は追加で必要な部品の確認までで終わった。
I bought parts for the job the other day, but I misunderstood about the current layout, so all I was able to do was to grasp types of additional parts necessary.

2つ目はスカイロケットの幹で植木鉢を置く棚を作ること。今年、去年とここで15年以上育てた2本のスカイロケットが連続して枯れた。冬の日当たりが良くないから弱って病気かと思っていた。太いところは5cmあるから、供養にせめて何かに使ってあげようと思っていたが、先日鉢を置く棚にしようと決めた。水やりの手間を省くため、夏はスプリンクラーの水が当たる場所に鉢を並べている。今までは地面直置きだが、小さい鉢は少し高くしてあげたほうが見てくれが良かろうとの考えだ。

The second is to make a shelf to put on pots by stems of sky rocket, a kind of juniper. In this year, and last year two sky rockets died consecutively after growing more than fifteen years here. I thought it was because they got sick by lack of sufficient sunshine in winter. As the thickness of the trees is about 5cm, I wanted to make something out of them for their soul. About a week ago, I decided to make a shelf. I place pots where water from the sprinkler is sprayed to save trouble of hand watering during summer. They are put on the ground by now, but I considered smaller pots would look better if they are raised a little.

先日、ノコギリで部品の切り出しは終えた。後は組み合わせるための切り欠きとネジ止めだ。

I had finished cutting parts from the stems. Now, I need to shape them and screw to assemble.

今日、ノコギリとノミでスカイロケットを削っていたら枯れた原因が明らかになった。
これだ。
Today when I was shaping trees with a saw and chisel, the cause of the death of the trees was revealed.

写真は成虫になった虫だが、白い芋虫も見られた。

The pictures are of imagoes, but I saw a white larva, too.

随分沢山のカミキリムシが入っている。これで枯れてしまったのか。ネットで見るとアカハナカミキリというのによく似ている。謎の死因を突き止めた監察医の気分になった。
There are so many tiny longicorn beetles in the stems. I knew they died because of them. By examining internet, they look like "Corymbia succedanea Lewis". I felt like a medical examiner pinning down the mysterious cause of death.

秋の花 Autumn flowers

秋は美しい。しかし、それは殆どの植物にとって終わりの始まりです。木の葉は恰も泣いているように色を変え散っていく。

Autumn is beautiful. It is, however, the season of the start of ending for the most of the plants. Leaves are going down after they changed their color like they cry.

同時に、別の植物にとって秋は繁栄の時です。例えば、ストレプトカーパスは涼しい日を喜んで次々と花を見せてくれます。
At the same time, Autumn is a season of flourishing for some other plants. My Streptocarpus for example are enjoying cool weather giving us flowers and flowers.

室内植物を引き合いに出すのはフェアでないと思うかもしれない。それなら、このネリネは第一陣の花が終わった後また咲こうとしている。

You may say it is not fair to pick up a indoor plants for an example. Then, this Nerine is trying to flower some more after they finished the first round of blooming. 

チランジアも咲き始めた。

Tilandsias are beginning to flower.

冬咲きクレマチスも咲きそうです。

Winter clematis is about to bloom, too.

多肉植物も花開いています。これはルビー・ネックレス。

Even succulents bloom. These are flowers of Ruby neckless. 

新しく作った寄せ植え。クレマチスとユーフォルビア。

My new arrangement, garden Cyclamen with Euphorbia.

子孫の準備をする者もいます。
Some prepares for the future descendants.

ハオルチアは夏よりも元気そうです。

Haworthias look healthier than in summer.

屋外園芸をもう暫く楽しめそうです。
I can enjoy outdoor gardening for a while.
