Brave or Too merry? 勇敢、それとも浮かれ過ぎ?

一月ほど前、デンドロビウムの一鉢がうまく咲かなかったと書いた。しかし、運良くそれは間違いだった。葉芽だと思っていたのが前部花になった。最終的に、大体20輪位の花。
About a month ago, I wrote that one of my dendrobium did not succeed in flowering. However, fortunately it was a miscomprehension. The bud that I thought to be leaves turned out to be all flowers. Probably about twenty of flowers in total.

咲くといえば、これは金魚草のプランターだ。びっくりするのは、これがぜんぶこぼれ種から自然に生えてきたということ。数年前に一度だけ何鉢かを買っただけ。その後は毎年こぼれ種から育っている。金魚草は寒さが好きで、冬の間も育つ。早春を飾るのに準備万端だ。
Talking about flowering, this is a planter of snapdragons. The amazing thing is these are all growing naturally from self-sawn seeds. I bought several pots only once a few years ago. Every year after that they grow from self-sawn seeds. Snapdragon likes cold weather, and grows even in winter. They are ready to decorate early spring.

寒さといえば、今週の天気は冬に戻ったようで、北風がビュービュー吹いている。しかし、どこにも勇敢で浮かれたた奴はいるものだ。山吹がたった一輪昨日咲いた。おっと、ちょっと早いぞ。
Talking about cold days, this week the weather is like back to winter, and north wind is blowing fiercely. But, there is a brave and merry one always. Only one kernia flower bloomed yesterday. Ooops, too early.

レンテンローズオンパレード Lenten Rose on parade

近年はほぼ毎年一鉢か二鉢のレンテンローズを買っている。なので、今や10ぐらい種類がある。幾つかの株は簡単にこぼれ種で増えているので、株の数はもっと多い。レンテンローズには色、花びらの数、花びらの細かい形、等々変化が多い。本当は花びらではなくがく片らしいが、まあいいではないか。それから、有茎種、無茎種という大きな区分もあるらしいが私のはどれがどっちだか今ひとつ判ら無い。

Almost every year, I bought one or two pots of Lenten Roses in recent years. So, there are about ten types of them, now. Number of plants are more because some of them are really good at propagating themselves by dropping seeds. There are lots of variations of Lenten Roses, in their color, number of petals, fine difference of petal shape, etc. Truth is they are not petals but sepals, but who cares. Also, there is a large division of species by whether it is caulescent  or acaulescent. However, I cannot be sure my collections are which.

Let's compare how my plants differ from each other.

白株は一つしか無い。これは最も古くから持っている株の一つだ。
I have only one white one with white flowers. This is one of the oldest among mine.

私の印象では黄花は最近になって市場に出てきたと思う。八重咲きは豪華に見える。
My impression is yellow flowers appeared in the market very recently. Double flower looks gorgeous.

後は皆赤花の部類だ。これは単純に花びらの両面が赤の物。この株のいいところはとても沢山花が咲くことだ。
The others are all in a red category. This has very simple red color both outside and inside. Nice thing about this plant is it flowers really lot of flowers.

これは赤の八重。
This is a red and double flower.

この端は赤だが、内側が白/緑色。
This flower is red but interior is white/green.

これは上のと同じ株から咲いているのだが、内側がもっと白い。
This is a flower came from the same plant above. Interior is whiter.

これは内側がピンク!
The interior is pink!

これは内側も赤だが、濃い色の網目模様がある。また、花びらが波打っている。
The interior is red and have dark vines. Also petals are ruffling.

これも内側の模様はよく似ているが波打ちはない。
This one has similar interior, but does not ruffle.

レンテンローズは下を向いているので花の写真を撮るのは簡単ではない。剪定枝でこの道具を発明して、花を上向きにひねるのに使った。
As the flowers of Lenten roses look down, it is not easy to take pictures of them. I invented this tool from one of the pruned branches, and used to twist flowers upward.

今日はシジュウカラが水浴びに来た。
Today, a great tit came for bathing.

昨日、いつもの様にうちの近所の園芸店にでかけた。妻に頼まれたように犬のマックスのおやつを買ったところ、500円相当のクーポンが頂けた。このクーポンは会員へのサービスで合計10,000円の買い物毎に頂ける。植物にそんなにお金はかけていない。もっとも大きく寄与しているのは、その店がやっている月々のマックスのシャンプーだ。

Yesterday, I as usual visited a gardening shop near my house. As my wife had requested, I bought a snack for our dog Max, and was given a coupon worth 500 yen. The coupon is a gift as a member of the shop that spent every 10,000 yen in total. I don't spend much for plants. The largest contributions are monthly shampooing of Max that the shop also do as a business.

既にクーポンをもう一枚貰っていたので、一枚はその日に使わなくてはいけないと思った。
I had received another coupon before, so I thought I had to spend at least one of them on the day.

店の中を30分程歩きまわり、このエロデューム・ペラルゴニフローラムというのを見つけた。
Walking around in the shop for about thirty minutes, I found this "erodium pelargoniflorum".

可愛い花だ。

第一にそのエロい名前が私を引き付けた。また、これはフウロソウの仲間なので冬も外で育てられる。そして、あまり手がかからない、というのは水をそれほど必要としないだろうから。注意しなくてはいけないのはできるだけ高温・高湿の場所に置かないこと。これは冬季成長の多肉と同じことだ。

First of all the erotic name really attracted me.  Also, it can grow in winter as it is in a group of Geranium. And, probably it would not require a lot of care because I believe it would not want much water. One thing I have to be careful is avoid putting them in hot and humid environment as much as I can that is same for most of winter growing succulents.

買う前からどこに植えるかも決めていた。家には何鉢かのニオイゼラニウムの鉢が有り、そいつらは高く伸び過ぎて根元が寂しくなる傾向がある。エロデュームは背が低いのでポットの用土を覆ってくれることだろう。

Before I bought them, I had already decided the places to plant them. I have several pots of scented geraniums at our garden that tend to grow too tall and the base of the plants look desolated. I was going to plant them there as the Erodium are low growing and I hoped they would cover the soil of the pots.

数カ月後には結果を見せられると思う。
I will show the result in a few months.

また暖かい日 Another warm day

またまた暖かい日。気温は16°まで上昇した。働かなくっちゃ。写真のようなアメリカサイカチの枝を数本切った。この木は去年も切ったのだが、切り痕があまり美しくない所に気づいていた。

Another warm day, the temp went up to 16C. Time to work. I pruned several branches like the ones shown below of honey locust trees. I cut these trees last year, but I noticed several cutting marks that were not beautiful.

温かいので、池に落ちていた枯れ葉を掃除して、一ヶ月位の間の蒸発を埋め合わせるために水を満たした。騒音のせいか、綺麗になった水が気に入ったのか、メダカが表面まで上がってきて漂っていた。
As it was so warm, I removed dead leaves dropped in the pond, and added water to compensate the evaporation since maybe a month ago. Because of the noise or they like purer water, killifish came to the surface and were drifting.

昨日まで福寿草は枯れたと思っていた。しかし、大丈夫だった、でも少し小さくなったようだ。
Until yesterday I thought my Amur adonis were dead. However, it was OK even though it got a little smaller.

地面に植えたチューリップもあちこちに葉を覗かしていた。ここは日陰なので、プランターに植えた物より成長が遅い。　　
I found tulips planted in the ground showed leaves here and there. The area is  shady, so they grow slower than the ones planted in the planters.

室内ではエピデンドラムとデンドロビウムが満開だ。
In the room, epidendrum and dendrobium are in full bloom.

ちょっと失敗 A little failure

2016.2.24

デンドロビウムの一鉢の花が咲き出した。幾つものバルブに沢山の花が咲くと思い込んでいた。

One pot of my dendrobiums began to bloom. I had believed there will be a lot of flowers on several bulbs.

残念ながら残りの芽は葉芽だった。そう、花が咲くのはたった1バルブ。
Unfortunately, the remaining buds are all becoming leaves as shown below. Yes, flowers are only on just one bulb.

原因は、肥料過多か、秋・冬の温度高すぎか、日照不足、それとも何? 今年は何か変えてみないといけないね。

The cause could be too much fertilizer in summer, too warm temperature in fall/winter, insufficient sunshine, or what? I have to try something different this year.

まあ、兎に角、芽が育ったら植えてやれば数を増やすことはできるよ。でも、冬の置き場所に困るだろうけどね。
Well, anyway I can multiply by planting the buds after they grow enough in summer. Although, I will surely have trouble to find a place to settle the pot during winter.

我慢 Patience

たまに園芸店に行くと、「これ欲しいな〜」と思う植物を見つけて我慢するのは一苦労だ。
Occasionally when I visit a gardening shop, it is very tough to refrain from getting plants that look really attractive.

我慢の理由はたくさんある。多肉、観葉、蘭などの室内植物だと冬の置き場がない。既に一部の丈夫な鉢は外で冬越しという可哀想な状況だ。屋外に植えるものでも、もう植える場所がない。どこも既に一杯なのだ。残っているのは歩く所か、一年中日の当たらない場所ぐらいだ。余りに高いものは枯れたら勿体無い。手のかかる物は世話が益々大変になる。

There are lots of reasons to resist buying. For indoor plants such as succulents, foliages, or orchids, there is no more space to have them stay in winter. Some relatively winter hardy plants pitifully bear winter outdoor. For outdoor plants, there is no land to plant them. Everywhere is full. The remaining space is pathways or the area with no sunshine all year round. Plants expensive is too risky to challenge. I don't intend to increase my labor any more for the plants that require attentive care.

されど、この季節は園芸作業も一休みが続いてきているし、ついフラフラっとなってしまいそうになる。要は何かやりたいのだ。

However, this season is when I have not been tasking myself for gardening for a while, and I tend to be tempted. The point is I want to do something.

今日はダッチ・アイリスの芽出し球根、クロッカスの芽出し球根、大輪ガザニアというあたりに手が伸びかけた。芽出し球根は地面から目が出ていてもうすぐ花が咲くよ〜ッて感じで置いてある。咲いたら綺麗だろうなぁと思ったが、いやいやうちだってチューリップの芽が出ているし同じ頃に咲くよ。と思いとどまった。ガザニアは15cm以上はあるかという大輪で色も派手だったので、いいなぁと思ったが、年中日の当たる場所でないと育ちが悪そうだ、と思いとどまった。

So, today I almost reached for the pots of budding Dutch iris, also budding Crocus, and large flower Gazania. Budding bulbs looked like saying we will bloom in any time. Although I imagined they would be beautiful when bloom, but I resisted reminding me that there were many tulip bulbs budding at home and it would be bloom about the same time. Gazania were the ones having big flowers of more than 15cm, the colors were showy, looked attractive. I also resisted thinking it requires the place with full sunshine around the year, and there is not any more such spaces.

我ながらよく思いとどまったと家に帰って庭を一周りしたら、鉢植えリンドウの芽がもう出ていた。桔梗と一緒に植えてあるので、去年はかなり狭苦しそうになっていた。サイトを検索すると桔梗は2、3月、リンドウは3、4月が植え替え・株分けの適期とある。しかし、今年は例年よりずいぶん暖かいから、やってしまえと植え替えた。同時に、桔梗とリンドウは別の鉢に分けた。探せばすることはあるんだ。これから爛漫の春になると次々とすることが出てくる。迂闊な買い物は禁物だ。

I walked around in my garden after I came back home thinking I did well to resist increasing my collection, and found buds of Gentians came out from the pot. As they are planted with Platycodon, balloon flower, the pot seemed too crowded last year. They need to be repotted. I found the proper seasons for repotting are February and March for bell flowers, and March and April for Gentians. But, it is much warmer than the average this year, so I dared to repot them. At the same time I separated the two species into different pots. There are things to do if I look for carefully. It will be real spring soon, and there'll be a lot to take care. I have to prohibit myself from careless buying.

昨日は日本中が異常に温かい一日だった。ここでは気温が20度を超え、４月か５月の暖かさだった。

Yesterday, it was unusually warm days throughout Japan. Here, it went higher than 20C, the temperature of April or early May. 

異常に温かい日々に誘われて、私のクリスマスローズはもう咲くのを待ちきれないようだ。蕾があちこちで膨らみ始めた。

Temped by the unusually warm days, my Christmas roses just can't wait to bloom. The buds started to swell here and there.

実は、クリスマスローズという名前は本来実際にクリスマスシーズンに花を咲かせるヘレボルス・ニゲルを指す。しかし日本ではもっともポピュラーなヘレボルス・オリエンタリスを含むヘレボルス属全体をクリスマスローズと読んでいる。クリスマスシーズンに咲かないのに。ヘレボルス・オリエンタリスはもっと相応しいイギリスなどで使われているレンテンローズという名前がある。レンテンローズという名前は花の咲く季節から来ていると思うが、同時にクリスマスローズの静かで控えめな花色はこの節制の季節に相応しいという気がする。

Actually, the name Christmas rose originally represents Helleborus Niger that really bloom in the Christmas seasons. However in Japan, all Helleborus genus including the most popular H.Orientalis are called as Christmas roses even though H.Orientalis does not flower at the Christmas seasons. H.Orientalis has a more proper name Lenten Rose the name commonly used in England and the other places. I think the name Lenten Rose came from the season it blooms, but at the same time I also feel the quiet and modest colors of flowers look proper for the abstinence period.

この株は我が家の玄関に向かい合った所でこぼれ種から育った。昨シーズン位から花が咲くようになった。

This plant grew from a self-sown seed facing our house entrance. It started to bloom from last season.
